Guest SCF
Hello everyone, I think I'm a dinosaur - been in Australia for most of my life but still dream about going back and being a true Brit again. Sadly it's easy to become trapped by the pension which you don't get if you go home, and even more sadly, when you get past middle age it's nigh on impossible to get a job in England. However in spite of all that my heart is and always has been there and I can feel the pull becoming stronger each year. Love reading all your comments. Cheers, SCF
Guest Guest16631
..........hello...........sorry your feeling unsettled..........do think the pull from places from our past can have an impact as we get older...........memories of happy days............places thought of with fond memories .............family and friends.........perhaps a holiday..?...............someone on here rented a place for a while...... would help to feel more part of the community than if just on holiday..............good luck to you ,............tink x
Freckleface
You should go for a nice long holiday if you can't go back permanently.

Cheers, SCF Everything you have said resonates with me as it is exactly the position I am in, except in reverse.....I am an Aussie who has spent the last 40-odd years in the UK, but now wants to go home. I would have loved to have gone earlier, but all my pensions are tied up in the UK, so I had no choice but to stay until I retire. That day is almost here, and even though financially it probably is not in my best interests, I am going to throw caution to the winds, and go. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. I agree that if you can't return permanently, then a long, long, long holiday is your best option.
whoiam
Sorry to barge in-- but is it true that you cant draw from your Aussie pension if you leave Oz in retirement?
Guest SCF
Hi Back to Life, it's kind of nice to know I'm not the only one on the planet caught in this dilemma. Just thinking about your situation though - it's possible to buy very cheap houses in the country still. Have a look at www.realestate.com.au and you can search within states and within price brackets. Amazing homes for sale if you don't want to live in the big smoke, at amazing prices. And as you probably know they're always negotiable and you can often get them well under the asking price. The lack of a reciprocal pension arrangement is a real pain. I hope you do come home. It's criminal to live where you really don't want to be especially at our age. All the very best anyway - be happy. The thrill of arriving home will be just out of this world. I have dreamt of it (in reverse) many times over the years. I also google maps my old house - how absurd at my age! but I do, and just pretend I'm there. Go for it. Best wishes, SCF
Guest SCF
Hi, you'e not barging in.. Yes, it is correct that you can't claim the Oz pension if you leave Oz except with certain countries that have a reciprocal arrangement with Australia. UK and Oz used to have that reciprocal agreement but it was scrapped in 2001 unfortunately. You can claim a percentage of your Oz pension if you leave to live in Ireland though, but only the old age pension. None of the other pensions, single parent, widow's etc etc are paid.
