Thanks everyone.... Just booked another. Its just hard to accept that I have lived here (UK) all my life and I cant get a good score. I think its true that the average UK born n bred person wont get good scores unless they learn how they score the tests....and revise lots...

Its funny because I thought the reading and listening were pretty easy as I could clearly get the answers?? and double checked them.!

Anyway, off to revise LOL...

On the reading and listening tests, if you need a 7 or higher you can really only get 5 questions wrong (out of 40) at the most; if you need an 8, you can only get 3 wrong at the most. I was aiming for an 8 so I did multiple practice tests until I got the score I wanted (37/40 on both listening and reading). If you keep running through those practice tests (Cambridge IELTS 7 and 8 were the best), you'll get there. As the others have said, it's all about practice, practice, practice for those two sections.

Its £125 in the UK. On my listening I messed up the last two questions as they had 2 answers in each question. The speaking was so short, with the answers in, that I had to guess which words were in each question... I knew I'd missed it.... So just being able to listen to English is not enough. I guess luck is more like it.

On my reading there was two questions again which asked for multiple answers. I couldn't understand what it was asking me so I called over the invigilator and asked her if I should be putting two answers in each box which she advised me I should... I'm sure that was wrong, should have stuck to my understanding I guess...

Is the test only required for permanent visa? Do you still have to take one if applying in Australia? Also why? If like most of you I have lived in UK all my life (42 years) You can't get more English than that, why do we have to take the test? I am born and bred English and so were my parents, their parents before them and so on...

If you're a UK citizen then you're assumed to have a competent level of English ability and meet the minimum requirements to lodge a visa application as far as English ability is concerned. However, if you want to claim any points for English ability, then you have to take the test. Most of us wouldn't have had enough points to apply otherwise (I know I wouldn't have).

well for me I have to get an overall 6.5 because I will be applying for SA SS where they changed the IELTS score to 6.5, it used to be 6.0 points and being british/american or irish with one of those passport (I have UK and US passport) you fall under the 6.0 mark, so I have to do the IELTS and get an overall 6.5 thanks to SA changing their rules!

I'm only taking it to get my points up to the required that I need.. If i get an 8 band I get 20 points which takes me to 70 points. A band 7 will take me to 60 points. As I got 6.5 I only have 50 points now... So its not really anything to do with Australia making me do the test....

Also state sponsorship requires a minimum of 7 for my skills....

I dont think you have to do it if you have a UK passport, or from an English speaking country.

I read it is just away of making your scores higher if you have a short fall with your age, lack of work experience etc etc.

That s great you have re-booked it , at least you will know what to expect second time round, i found that some of the past papers on the IELTS website or just Google practice IELTS papers did help. Also if you know someone who is a teacher or in that line of work then why not ask them to look over your writing, reading or even try your speaking with them and see if they can teach you certain methods . Good luck
