Guest Beezo
Hi all, My family and I have been looking at migrating to Melbourne. All should be good for a State Sponsored Visa. Just looking at the hoops one has to jump through to get a Visa though and it seems daunting. E.g. although I'm English, have a degree from an English University I need to sit a language proficiency test to get accredited for this? Can this be true???? So, would very much like to know if anyone has completed the Visas themselves - can it be done? or am I better off employing an agency/solicitor to do this for me? Your experiences would be very much appreciated. Regards
nycplanner
If you want to claim points for English proficiency then, yes, you'll have to sit for the IELTS test. As a native English speaker, I understand how strange it sounds, but most of us wouldn't have had enough points to qualify otherwise. You will not find the test particularly difficult. We decided to go with an agent because we wanted to make sure it was being done right the first time - also, our application was not entirely straightforward. If you've done your research and don't mind pouring over forms and piles of paperwork, then you could save yourself some money and do it on your own. But if your application is not straightforward or you're not detail-oriented then it might be worth seeking out an agent. I would highly recommend reaching out to an agent and getting your case evaluated (usually this is free) just to get a better sense of what you'll need to do going forward. Go Matilda is pretty highly regarded on PIO.
Guest sadiesmum
We paid £3k for an agent to deal with our visas and its been a nightmare, its taken 3 times longer than expected, they havent kept us up to date at all (we have had to do all the chasing) and it has been declined today, (however they are saying they are able to reapply with an adjustment). In hindsight I would have rather have figured the paperwork out myself and saved the money to spend on something else.
Steph01
I started off by doing my visa application myself. But I would only recommend this if you feel confident you know what your doing and its very time consuming. I'm now going for state sponsorship and have got Go Matilda to help me. To be honest I wished I'd just got them to do it all from the start. They are great and I really do rate them!

Davo1
Hi, As above re language (IELTS) you would need to sit this to gain extra points if you are short. Most folk have to. Straight forward enough but I would advise you undertake 'practice tests' (you can get materials online) to get you familar with the style of questions etc. RE Visa, again if your case is not straightforward, maybe using an agent would better. Most of them give you a free assessment regardless. HOWEVER if you are confident enough to do it yourself, I would say you could do it yourself. We have and it take time and patience but it saved us loads and if you are stuck on the application most people on PIO can help, as well as the DIAC etc. Good Luck! They can be found at: https://www.mara.gov.au/ All the registered migration agents who regularly post on this forum are OK. My advice is to have an initial consultation with a registered migration agent and then decide whether you want a registered migration agent to manage your case.
