Shipping items - what actually happens?

Hi all

Excuse the silly title...

I'm wondering if anyone who has already gone through the experience of shipping furniture/goods from UK to Australia could tell me what actually happens? Any advice? Any tips?

We aren't shipping that many items but want to be prepared as possible.

We are taking a leather couch,

a flat screen TV, 42"

a double wood bed frame (flat packed down) ,

two square ikea tables (flat packed down)

and a Dyson (small pull along)

and approx two boxes of personals. Our clothes will fit into two suitcases for the plane.

Q - Did you find the removal companies provided enough wrapping material? Should we wrap the TV ourselves? Any tips? Should we label all?

Q - We have had quotes from Crown, Doree Bonner, PSS Int and John Masons - Price ranges from 900 - 950. Any tips on who is the best?

Q- Are there any hidden charges we need to watch out for - ask the removal company?

Sorry its a bit of a ramble but im about to decide which removals to go with and wanted to know others experience. I've already been advised that the Dyson needs to be top spec cleaned before being packed.

any tips would help so much

many thanks all.

try whites and company aswell

where are you shipping too? sydney, perth, etc

everything we had was re-packed. we had bought new bedframe about 18months ago and it was still in the wrapping, whites put another coating of bubble wrapping paper over the packaging.

they also wrapped up our TV, we did nothing in attempt to wrap it beforehand. Dyson i took completely to bits and cleaned eveywhere possible, also put in new filters before shipping.

If you are shipping to sydney there is about 270cubic feet remaining in my container which will probably cost about £750'ish

The only extra charge you will have to pay is AQIAS fees in australia, the forwarding company will deal with that and send you a bill before they will release your goods.

- Most packers expect to pack everything themselves - I would not bother trying to pre-pack to be honest.

We are going from Nottingham to Port Stephens , NSW.

I will get another quote from Whites.

How much is the AQIAS fees in australia?

Any other tips and advice greatly appreciated...when did you both book your removals? How much in advance??

We used Crown and although we didnt take a lot ,the stuff they did pack was done well and we recieved everything on time and in tact. The price they quoted was what we paid, they included everything and there were no extra port charges at this end, of course if any of your stuff is pulled by customs ,you would have to cover those costs.

The only thing we had to pay from this side was when our stuff was ready to be delivered because in the UK we didnt have a forwarding adress and where we settled here was just outside the free delivery radius. From memory i think it was about $50.
