wattsy1982
Hi, We are currently going through the visa application and looking to hopefully move ou to the gold coast july 2013. I am getting a few quotes etc from shipping companies already...am I getting carried away, how soon in advance etc would you suggest looking. Also, I am considering shipping our car out in the same container too...worth the hassle? Thanks Dan
Rupert
Yes, way too early for shipping quotes. They probably won't even be valid by the time you are ready to move and you will need to do it again. You can get a rough idea from many threads on here. Something like £3.5-£4k for a 20ft and perhaps £5-£6K for a 40 foot. Most opinion seems to be that it is not worth shipping a car, unless you have something a bit special.
Guest
Agree with Rupert. Way to early to be getting quotes. I'd wait till you have your visa confirmed, have a date in mind to go and then contact some companies a few months or so in advance. Perhaps email them now to ask how much notice they usually need to quote and ship etc but defo don't bother with quotes at this point. I'd be doing more broad general research at this point. Cost of living, areas to live, accommodation, schooling if its needed and so on. All done from the comfort of your sofa or desk at home online. Can give you a good general idea of what you are looking at and then you can slowly draw up your game plan. All the actual moving planning will be much nearer the time. wattsy1982
thanks, when i say quotes i meant asking roughly the cost of x ft container from here to oz, nothing drawn up in writing. We have lived out there for 18months previously so know the area and our preferred areas etc..just need to look into schools etc as we were child free last time. The whole car issue seems to have mixed feelings. I have an audi a4 sline, lovely car, probably worth £7000-£8000 here but would cost $25,000 AUD over there....decisions decisions! Thanks for your input Dan
fleabo
Nothing wrong with asking so you have a reasonable estimate of your costs.
calNgary
Hi Dan Where on the Coast are you heading for and how long is it since you were here. Its changed alot down there this last year or 2. Good Luck with the planning and although a tad early to get definate quotes you can still get a guide cost for working out the financial side of migrating.. We have a full thread on importing cars you may find useful, some people bring them but it can be a pain and the paperwork and hassle puts alot of people off.
