Shazbot Posted August 1, 2012 Share Posted August 1, 2012 Hey all, Has anyone had any luck with getting employer sponsored visa's in the GIS field? I'm a Remote Sensing specialist with 8+ years of experience, looking for a good job in Perth hopefully. Do any of you work in this field and have made the trip over? I'd be curious to see what practical wages are being offered for what positions. I'd also like to think there's a growing demand for such a niche job that i could get lucky with a 457 right through the gate. Any info would be greatly appreciated. JennyandPete Posted August 4, 2012 Share Posted August 4, 2012 I too am in this field of work...i have never seen any sponsorship positions but then again maybe i have been looking in the wrong places. From what i have seen GIS jobs range from GIS Officer/Technician roles ($50k+) to the high end GIS Geology roles (£100k+) I would love to be able to get into the GIS geology stuff but i havent got any experiance of mining/geology. Im trying to keep my eyes open for a junior or trainee positions but they are very rare. There seems to be plenty of GIS positions in Perth but from what i have seen is the majority are for senior or mining positions. There is definately more opportunities in GIS in Australia.. I take it from your location you will be experienced in mining/geology GIS so i would have thought you would have no problem getting work. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
VERYSTORMY Posted August 4, 2012 Share Posted August 4, 2012 Most companies will take a GIS officer without mine experience. All of the majors will happily recruit and a lot be happy to sponsor. My advice is to ping a CV to all of the majors with offices in Perth such as anglogoldashanti, Newmont, Newcrest (though they are in Brisbane), BHP, Rio, FMG, Atlas. All my experience is in aerial surveying and mapping, so aside from providing those companies with imagery and LIDAR, i am not the guy keeping track of the data~ Thanks for the update though, as i just applied for a WHV (as a bonus and backup) and start applying this week to some specific jobs.
