Ok folks.. I know it been covered, although fragmented in parts / posts. But here goes.,.,

Item (1) ... I know you can get extra allowance if emirgrating etc. But, the small print may catch me out. Ive already undertaken my Reccie trip, which could be the small print im refering to. Ive read on another post that Singapore Airlines give you extra but only if its an unvalidated visa. [as in a reccie]

Ive heard of opening bank accounts.... IOM ? and others... But which work if you have already activated your visa by Reccie but wsh to take some decent weight!

Item (2) ... Ive heard August is expensive and that the following months are cheaper,,, is this still correct.. anyone booked anything recently.

THANKS FOLKS x

Danny and Em,

I suggest you consider BA as they only charge you £40 for an additional suitcase which therefore gives you 46kg - Make sure it is a BA flight and not a qantas code share. Alternatively Emirates allow 30kg as standard.

The problem is now that BA don't fly to Aus all the way like they used to. They codeshare from Asia onwards often now. I think they do still fly into some cities but you do need to be careful of the codeshare. Although Qantas offer a similar deal now on the baggage, but it may mean paying twice.

August is expensive from the UK as its our summer hols. But then it goes into Aus spring and summer and so prices will jump again.

I'd check the airline deal websites.

it's not a problem as long as your first flight (from the UK) is a BA one and the baggage is checked all the way through - Qantas will then honour it for their segment,

This section contains numerous recent threads on the subject, one on the first page with info on migrant fares and excess. Perhaps have a read back through some of the threads for info.

http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/flights-holidays/

thats what i have done and extracted the info onto my own word doc for collating the info. I thought i would be ok for the baggage allowance, but these threads have told me about it only being valid for trips where the Visa has not been activated, hence my post for a heads up and experiences gained. Nothing was really concluded on previous posts and was hoping to jog along the info on does and donts. Its the small print and hign sight that i`m trying to `snifter` out for no suprises

Ok if you've already validated your visa then you are not entitled to the migrant excess as a rule

The migrant baggage is usually for unvalidated permanent visas only.

This may be different if signing up with a bank or something so check their small print.

BA & Qantas both offer good deals on excess on a normal flight. Or look at shipping excess via an excess baggage company.

I can confirm that you only pay £40 for an extra suitcase for the entire UK to Australia trip as I did this just over a week ago. Qantas have also changed there excess baggage charges so even if you did somehow get a UK to Singapore flight with Qantas you would still only pay something like $90 per excess suitcase.

Seems reasonable.

I've just booked my flight with them this morning. Saw a one way price for 3rd Sept for £633 on Kayak and when I went to book it it took me direct to Singapore Airlines website so I decided to ring them about luggage allowance.

The girl I spoke to says that I was only allowed 20kg, but when I asked if they would increase it as it was one way on an unvalidated 457 visa she said that they only doubled the allowance for PR visa's. She went away and spoke to someone and said they would give me 30kg so I asked her to book it for me there and then. Seats all reserved and confirmation emails received.

On the Airbus A380 as well so I'm well chuffed, and I'm on the upper deck so should be a bit quieter.

Might be a silly question, but hoping to fly out end of sept with my hubby and two children 10yrs and 6YRS do we all get our own luggage allowance or is it done as a group thing?

You all get your own but you can combine it if that makes sense.

Depending on airline the allowance varies. BA & Qantas are 23kg iirc, Singapore 20kg and Emirates 30kg as standard. Check your airlines website for their limit. This is usually limited to one piece of checked luggage each. A suitcase or holdall. A single bag cannot exceed 32kg.

Hope that makes sense :)
