Guest annerichard
Hi all. Hope that there is someone out there who could advise us?:notworthy: We have been living in W.A now for the last 5 weeks once we got over the turmoil of getting a house to live in, my hubby started to apply for work and has applied for over 300 jobs in the gas trade plus others as it is his skill that we were able to get to Australia. He has only received replies from 3 companies:sad:, and one of them have messed him about saying that they are going to contact and never do:arghh:. We are constantly chasing people and running out of money fast as we have to charge our internet dongle and mobile $30 every 3 days where he is constantly on the net trying to get work plus rent, food, and all the other house hold bills that go with it, school stationary and uniforms. He has gone on courses to get extra certificates to better his C.V but this does not look like it has helped. Before I left the U.K I worked as an Un-qualified T.A in a special needs school, and before that I worked in a childrens nursery, but the Australians are all about paper and need you to have every certificate for anything. I would like to get my childcare 111 certificate which is almost $3.000, 1st aid cert $200.00, WWC Cert $50 +, Police check almost $70. just to be able to do the job I love! If there is anybody that has any idea what we can do as we came to Oz for a better life and at the moment they way things are going we will have to move back to the U.K completely broke and have to start again. If anybody can advise as what to do next, we will be so grateful. Thanks in advance Anne
surflen22
Hang in there! Perth is notorious for being slow. WA also stands for wait awhile. I've been told that potential employers can take a loooonnnng time to get back to people. Have you looked into agencies that you or your partner could approach for assistance in finding work? Guest roaminnomore
Try the PIO Perth website and see if there is anyone who can offer a few leads. Best wishes.

He has gone to agencies, but nobody will touch me with out the relevant qualifications. We have been to centre link and they booked him an appointment with what we thought was a job centre. The appt was supposed to take 89 minutes the lady that he seen was 1/2 hour late seeing him and he was there for 10 mins, she gave him a sheet with email addresses on it and he was told that this is all she could do for him as we have not been in the county for 2 years. But the sad thing is that the email addresses and jobs are the same as the ones that he has already applied for
surflen22
What about the face to face approach? Making a list of companies and just getting out there and going round them. Aussies seem to be keener on the personal touch rather than email/telephone. Going into these places might direct him to somewhere that does have a vacancy. Is there any other type of work you could do?
Paul1Perth
5 weeks isn't a long time to get a job anywhere, especially when you're new to a country and don't have any local experience or contacts. I was out of work for 5 months when we came in 92, mind you it was dire getting work then, middle of a recession. I know it doesn't help you but like the others say hang in there, something will turn up, you will probably get 2 or 3 things coming through together and have to make a choice. That happened to me after thinking I would never get anything. Hopefully you can look back on this period in another year or so and it will be just a bad memory. Good Luck, it really is nice here once you have a job and settled in.
Bob1
In terms of your work, no one will touch you in any child care without a working with children card or police clearance so get those sorted straight away- they are compulsory if you have contact with children in any way. There seems to be lots of work going in Child Care centres - you'd need a first aid certificate for that as well I think. Look in the West Australian on a Saturday. If you can get some local experience in a child care centre then when you are bit more financially secure you could arrange your Cert III in order to get into a school. And while you're waiting for the WWC card to come through why not advertise on gumtree for babysitting in your area - that'll be cash in hand and at least help pay the grocery bill. People will always pay for ironing as well if you can bare that! Can;t help with hubbys job, sorry, don;t know anything about that!
nicolac34
The way we did it when we arrived was that we applied for everything we thought we had a hope in hells chance of getting a look in for. The idea was that it was just to get some income coming in so we could then work out what the next stage was - as in get proper jobs. I went and did temping PA/basic office work until I could sort my CV out and work out who I should be applying to. Could you do something similar whilst you are waiting to sort out your childcare certificates?
Rossmoyne
Anne I feel your frustration and Surflen22 is right about WA being notoriously slow. Registering with agencies is a good suggestion for both you and your husband. As a new migrant, it can be difficult to get work initially in your particular specialised fields. Perhaps you both could consider looking for work in any area at all until you can find something to suit you in your given fields of expertise. As you have experience as an Education Assistant (Teacher Assistant in UK), you might be able to get some relief work at local schools to you. In WA there is no central data base of relief staff for schools and each school has their own "relief list". Consider delivering your resume to all your local schools and explain that you are available at short notice. Good Luck - I am sure work will come your way soon. Thanks in advance Anne I have been told by lots of gas lads who have gone over that until you have experiance doing it in oz no one will touch you (and how can you get that if no one will touch you), might be worth contacting agencies and taking anything to get some income until you get the break.... good luck you have done the hard bit getting there this is just a bump in the road compared to getting through the visa application....
