Hi

We are a couple aged 30, with an 8 year old son looking for other pommies to socialise with. With or without children, for friday, saturday evening dinners in Melbourne, or meeting for lunches. We would probably have our son with us, as we don't have a babysitter yet. We're in North Melbourne but are happy to travel.

There are quite a few Brits around the inner city and they do have meet ups now and again, not sure they are child friendly though. Pop over to Life in Victoria forum there is a link at the foot of this forum. Quite a few people who are already living here and looking to socialise.

Good luck

How did you find it when you got there with getting a place to live?? We would love to meet up, warm weather sounds amazing, it has been raining over here in Cornwall for the last 3 days - awful!! Hi Sophie. Hope you are well. Its very different here finding a place to live they do open days in the properties where people who are interested go and look round then you apply if you want to. It can be quit competitive you really have to sell yourself! We wrote a profile on ourselves and did some references! Even if you do a reference with a friends name and contact details, they don't seem to follow up on them. We got somewhere and moved in within 2 weeks of arriving, we kind of just wanted to get somewhere and feel settled. We're in North Melbourne which is near the hospital where i work, I'm a nurse. Have a look on realestate.com.au, you can look at properties and see when the open days are for when you get here. Are you coming on 457 visa? The Weathers been cool here, its not cold compared to home but its not hot! Its stared to get warmer. English weather is rubbish! Summers are such a washout although i thought it would be nice in Cornwall now! What date are you flying? Are you getting excited now? Speak soon Becky xx

Hi Becky, schools and houses are my obsession at the moment - do we find the location or the school first? how do we know it's a good school/suburb? the questions just go round and round in my head....aaagggh!!! Really hope we find somewhere quickly, already starting to box things up and I hate all my things being packed up!

Which hospital do you work at? I will be working at the Peter Mac Cancer Centre - I'm a researcher working in cancer clinical trials.

We are provisionally planning on flying out first week in October and my job starts on Oct 22nd - depending on what hospital you are at, we could meet up in Melbourne once I get started??

The weather in Cornwall is rubbish - seriously! Summer holidays have been a washout over here and it has rained every weekend - we normally head to the beach but we haven't been once since school broke up!!

how has your son settled into his new school?? and how did you choose one??!!!

speak soon and thanks for all the advice on houses! xx

Mordialloc, Aspendale, Edithvale, Chelsea, Bon Beach are all ok to live. We lived in Edithvale for 11 years. If looking at this area look at the areas near the station, there is a suburb called Aspendale Gardens but its not as close as the older parts of Aspendale.

I have a friend being treated at Peter Mac and she lives in Edithvale and gets the train for her treatment.

Hi Sophie.

It's a difficult one. We found the location and then the school, mainly because we didn't really think that much about it at the time, luckily the school that Noel goes to is brilliant, but might be worth checking out the schools first because not all of them are the same, and you can only go to the school in your catch meant area. I would try and get out as soon as you can before you start. We got out about 16 days before i started working which was ok, but would have been better to have a little bit more time to get things sorted. You feel pretty crappy when you get here from the jet lag, it just gives you a bit more freedom.

Have you got somewhere to stay when you arrive?

I work at the Royal Melbourne, the private part of it, so meeting in Melbourne would be great for me!

Noel loves school here, its quite different, there is a lot more focus of building confidence and making the child well rounded, which we think is great. Australian people are really confident and self assured, very different to Pommies! They don't say sorry all the time!

Hope the plans going well.

Speak soon. x

Hiya, thanks for all the info, we have started to look at schools and annual reports etc which is helpful, but really great to hear Noel has settled and enjoys it all.

Ive got about 2 weeks between landing and starting work - we don't have anything definite yet to stay, but maybe a holiday place out near where we think we will live - so difficult doing everything by Internet!!!

are you out there on a 457?? How did you find the application process?? We are 8 days since lodging and had correspondence back saying all is ok with docs and is just being processed - just a waiting game now I guess!

Will be very close to you if you are at royal Melbourne, and be great to meet up - are you on Facebook? If you are, find me as Sophie Mepham with the pic of a sunset and kangaroo (!!!!) then we can stay in touch easier or I can message you my email address. Must meet up when we get there!

Take care and speak soon xx
