holiday ideas to validate visa

We're planning on validating our visa in April 2013 and will be spending time in Sydney and also Tasmania. We are contemplating travelling up to Cairns to visit the Reef so our children can do some snorkelling but not sure if they will be too young? (8 & nearly 6). If not, is it better to go to one of the pontoons or an island? We were also looking at the Kuranda skyrail / train but not sure whether it will be worth the cost of the flights etc and we'd be better off doing more things around Sydney / Tasmania & waiting till they are older.

We have quite a few ideas for things to do in Sydney but we haven't been to Tasmania before so any suggestions for fun family activities within an hour or two of Launceston would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi

re the snorkelling we validated last year and flew from Hervey Bay to Lady Elliot Island which is the southern most point of the great barrier reef ( so you dont have to go all the way up to Cairns )and the snorkelling was fantastic, we have photos of the kids swimming with turtles, rays and there was even a reef shark sniffing around, our kids were 8, 10 and 13 at the time and they loved it.
