Just two questions...

Why is it when I'm watching Poms in Oz on the TV, all the houses have a similar kind of fence around them? It's a corrigated metal fence. Are they steel (galvanised) or Aluminium? Why are they metal? Is it to stop fire spreading? Don't they get hot in the sun?

Also when we see BBQ's thay all seem to be posh propane powered jobs, are there laws governing BBQ's? Do they all have to be gas powered? or can you have charcoal? Is charcoal frowned upon?

I know some of you will think I am crazy for asking these questions, but it has been bugging me for a while.

The fencing is to meet with the building regulations, it is steel, usually from a firm called Colorbond

There are probaby more gas bbq's available than charcoal, also gas bbq's are quicker to fire up and start cooking on, so its probably a convenience thing...

Hi there, I don't know about the fences, I'm not sure why it matters? where I'm from in oz they're all mostly asbestos looking

As far as I know fencing is expensive, so I'm wondering if its just a budget decision on what you use?

On the BBQ question, its personal preference. I think most people use gas because its instant. But I think most Aussies these days have a weber in the shed, (reserved for special occasions)... my ma pulls her weber out on Christmas day, but uses gas throughout the year!

hope I've helped?

I think that if there are fire bans in place you are only allowed to use a gas BBQ which may be why. I would imagine that fences are colourbond because termites plus the harsh weather would soon destroy wood ones.

In some places like QLD you have the risk of termites that would eat wood so metal or wire fences last forever and can't be eaten. I lvoe my barbie and gas ones are much cheaper than they are in England. You can get small ones for about $60 rather than a 4 burner. They are so convenient and we have only had to get a refill twice in 4 years.

Fencing styles differ from place to place throughout Australia and the steel fences you see (Colorbond) are also typical of a certain era. I can't remember exactly when they started manufacture - maybe the 1980's or thereabouts? - but relatively recently.

They are popular in some areas because, as mentioned, they are not subject to termites, they don't need repainting, they provide maximum privacy and they are relatively cheap. In some areas which are prone to bushfire they are also compulsory.

However I have heard that, in some other council areas, they are no longer permitted because they are considered unsightly.

There are areas where you would be hard pressed to find one. Where I live the fences are wooden (no termite problem), brick, stone or powder coated tubular steel or aluminium.

There are no laws governing what type of BBQ you have - at least not around here. I think people just find the gas ones more convenient if they are using it frequently. Also, on days of high fire danger in fire prone areas, gas BBQs are the only ones permitted.
