Guest katieb14
Hi guys, I am in the process of moving to Australia with my current company and will be working on a FIFO contract. I am trying to find a homebase at the moment but can't decide between Cairns or Townsville? Can anyone offer any advice on the difference in the 2 places? I am moving out on my own so ideally am looking for somewhere where i will be able to meet people. I am female, 30, love scuba diving, singing and socialising. Any advice will be gratefully received. Thanks Kind regards Katie
Bobj
G'day mate, either, or... Townsville is a garrison city of about 175,000 people, it is in a sort of rain shadow receiving about 45 inches of rain whereas Cairns has about 155,000 people and receives about 82 inches of rain, making it very humid for about 4 months of the year. Both cities have excellent shopping facilities and first rate air travel. Plenty of scuba at both places. The only downside that I see, Cairns is more likely to cop a battering from cyclones. Cheers, Bobj.
Xenon4017
Some people rail against Townsville because it has a large military population. But, 30 year old female, moving out on your own who enjoys socialising? Could be..... I'm not sure if Cairns is a great place to live, but it's definitely a great place to visit. I went in the winter when it's coldest (least warm), and it's beautiful. Why not have a week in each before you decide?
Tamsalina
As Bobj said we get less rain in Townsville which is always a bonus! I haven't been here for a wet season yet, but I spent my honeymoon in Cairns 5 years ago and it didn't stop raining the whole time! I've got 2 small kids so I don't do much socialising, but from being out and about there seems to be a good social scene here. And lots of hunky soldiers everywhere!! haha! Guest The Pom Queen
Personally I'd opt for Cairns every time, sorry all you down South, also re Cyclones wherever they come ashore its the South of them that get it worse, so as they always seem to track to the South of us, Tully/Innisfail etc then I don't think it will be much different where you live in regards cyclones. Cairns is more of a holiday resort which can be good and bad, you will come across lots of single backpackers your age out and about.

Can I ask if you haven't been here for a wet season how do you know you get less rain than us  We are currently in our dry season and probably won't see much rain until November.
