Hi Friends, I am from Bangalore and cleared my ICAI CA finals in May 2011 and have one year of work experience in External Auditor field. I have completed my B.Com graduation from Bangalore University through correspondence and have done my 3.5 years of CA articleship from Apr 2007 to Oct 2010... Kindly let me know how much work experience will be considered for my aus immigration purpose ?

I am from South Africa so I did my articles through the SAICA training programme, I they counted all 3 years (ie, from when I completed my honours degree and started working full time). I didn't need the points for 3 years work experience, so I will never know if they counted them or not, but you could always ask the ICAA (Australia's CA authority) to confirm your experience.

Good luck!

I don't know how the CA programme works in SA but in India, the degree will be awarded only on completion of the 3 years training programme and passing the final examination. I got my skills assessed from CPA recently and my articleship period was not counted.

It's similar in RSA - you do your BCom degree, then an honours degree. Then you work full time by a recognised training office (usually one of the big four firms) for 3 years. During those 3 years you must pass part 1 and part 2 of the qualifying examinations - only after passing both exams and completing the training contract successfully will you be awarded your CA designation.

The DIAC considers your work experience to be from the moment you complete your university degree and start working full time. The awarding of the professional designation doesn't reset the clock for your work experience (whether it was called articles or not) as long as it was full time.

Why didn't you get your skills assessed by the ICAA? Just wondering...

I am afraid that articleship will not recognised as skilled work experience and am pretty sure on this (of course I would have been more than happy if they did as I would have got my PR last year itself).

It will be a differenct case if one starts working and not undergo practical training after the Bachelors. You must be lucky that they counted your articleship period towards work experience.

Full time work is defined somewhere on the DIAC's web site as any paid employment that lasts for more than 20 hours a week. Who told you that they don't count articles as towards your work experience? I'm not sure it's the same in RSA but we work as auditors from day one... although it's a practical training contract, you actually do all the work of an auditor. By the end of year 3 you're basically running an audit team as a senior.

Anyway :) Good luck. They definitely counted at least 1 year for me since I needed that to apply for the visa at all (I finished articles at the end of 2011).

Yeah, It's pretty much same here too. I did my articles with a Big 4 firm. Assessment might vary, case to case.

Anyways thanks for your wishes, have a great time in Oz.

  • 2 years later...

My agent has said that my CA articleship/internship will count since it is more than 20 hours per week and it was paid(however low it was). Is this correct? Even if they don't count my articleship my score would be 70 points. And even if they do not count my proprietorship I still would score 65 points. But I don't want to be in a scenario where they reject my proposal and ban me or something of that sort for giving them a wrong score. Although its clearly written in my EOI application where I'm an article/intern and where I'm a proprietor so I'm definitely not hiding anything! :)

Hi Yash

CA Articleship will definitely not be considered as valid work experience both the DIAC and the assessment authority (CPA/ICAA).

If you include your articleship in your EOI and if points is awarded for the same, your application for visa will be rejected due to wrong details.

You should look at changing your agent if he has advised you that CA Articleship will be counted as valid work experience.
