Price of Chicken to double next week?? Maybe

OH has just asked me to find out why the price of chicken is supposed to be doubling in price next week, just checked and have pasted link below.

 

In Australia .. sorry folks should have said that in the title ....

 

Looks like I am off to Cole´s to join the queue ....... :dull:

Chicken Meat Federation deputy director Vivien Kite says grain prices have increased significantly over the last three months on the back of forecasts of heavy drought impacts on the US corn crop."For example, we've seen wheat prices here increase by about $100 a tonne over the last three months and that represents an increase of around 30 per cent, perhaps even more," she said."Feed costs make up around about 65 to 70 per cent of the cost of producing a live chicken, so taking all of that into account we would expect that this surge in feed grain prices will push chicken meat production costs up by about 5 per cent."A 5 per cent increase is the official forecast, but Australia's largest meat producer Baiada says its prices may need to rise by 40 per cent.

"It all depends on supply. If there's a shortage of supply, it could rise between 10 and 40 per cent," managing director Simon Camilleri said.Mr Camilleri says prices could rise for as long as nine months."The outlook on grain is we're going to have higher grain costs until at least April or May next year. In the future, that's what it's telling us so it could rise for as long as six or nine months," he said.But after a glut of chicken meat in the past three months, the price for consumers is going to appear much greater.Michael Braidotti, who runs a fresh food market in Wollongong, says it is more likely to double."I'm told it could go up as much as 100 per cent," he said."We'll probably go to around I'd say about 10 or 11 dollars a kilo more than likely."Chicken is a favourite protein for Australians, who eat on average 43 kilograms a year - that's double than what they ate 30 years ago.Mr Braidotti says consumers will probably swing to beef."The reason that will happen is because at the moment there's an oversupply of Australian red meat," he said."Therefore the demand will switch off white meat, the chicken, it'll go over to the red meat and that'll take up the slack and the demand for chicken will drop off and the price should drop back."

i know this isn't about chicken, but I really miss british pork, I just don't like the taste of it over here lol. Paul reckons it tastes the same but not to me.

 

i eat chicken more than anything but we're only having it once a week atm cos it's pricier and we're poor travellers on a budget lol.

I am not a fan of Pork, it goes back to when I was pregnant with my second baby, just went off it, it reminds me of chewing cardboard, not that I have ever chewed cardboard, a nice leg of Pork is good though, cooked slowly and served with apple sauce and the trimmings .... I am not a fan of chops though ... I am not a huge red meat eater .... really don´t like steak .....

Buy chicken at Aldi's its cheaper than Coles or Woolies

 

I have checked out the price at ALDI and here it is either the same or more expensive, it got me, because I thought it would be cheaper. The salmon is cheaper in ALDI though, as are a lot of things.

Its not amazingly cheaper, but every penny counts, my weekly shop in Aldi is about $30 less than other markets and their meat and fresh produce selection is vastly improving

lean pork fillet, stir fried...absorbs flavours and spices better than anything.

It will affect all meat I imagine as the farmers feed grain to a lot of beef cattle etc.

 

We eat a lot of chicken and even though it may go up I think its such a big market that the price will still be ok. I like thigh fillets as they are a lot tastier than the breast which tends to be drier. I just pick up whole chickens when on special. We have a Coles and Woolworths next to each other so competition is big also a chicken shop/butcher next to Coles which has a lot of cheap meat and in family size lots.

 

I love roast lamb but will not pay the price for it.

Aldi breasts for me $8.99 a kilo. $9.99 in woolies and not as nice . The butchers was selling good stuff at 5.99 but shot up to $9.99 overnight a while back . You can tell my mrs has been away too long that I know all the prices !

Don't forget to stretch it out for another meal. If you've got any chicken with bones, boil up the bones or carcass and keep the stock for a risotto. A simple risotto with the stock, white wine, parmesan and peas is delicious.

Never made risotto before...I might actually try this!

 

Our problem is the three of us all work different shifts, so we rarely eat at the same time. One comes in and makes something, opens the chicken and cooks for one, the next person opens steaks and the next one fancies some soup. And we don't all like the same things...my wife and stepdaughter like mince and potatoes, I don't. My stepdaughter and I like chili con carne, my wife doesn't. My wife and I like Spag Bol, my stepdaughter doesn't. Apart from a little bit of seasoning and the accompaniment (potatoes/rice/pasta), they're very similar, but one out of the threee od us doesn't like them. If we do cook enough for three, then at least one person will have had something at work or not be hungry, etc. Even cheap food starts to get expensive when you throw half of it away.
