Guest mark1066
Hi all i moved over from the UK 10 months ago on a 457 visa and work fifo 2 weeks on 2 off, now if i have a Oz address but on my 2 weeks off lived in Bali would i still be able to get PR once 2 years has gone whilst on my 457 visa? I know a lad at work who lived in Bali on his time off so was working 2 weeks in Oz then 2 weeks in bali and just got his PR so is this the rule for all? cheers Mark
Rupert
Getting a PR visa is not dependent upon number of days in the country, this is not citizenship. Getting a PR visa depends upon whether you qualify for a PR visa. I got my PR despite not having stepped foot in Australia for 12 years prior. Guest mark1066
But I am talking about getting PR from a 457 sponsored visa after 2 but on my off time which is 50% living in Bali, I understand people can get PR straight up but I'm more concerned about from 457 visa as I know one lad who worked in East Timor but lived in Perth for a Oz company paying tax ect on a 457 visa but got his PR application rejected for working out if Oz but then I know another lad who worked in Oz for 2 weeks but lived in Bali on his time off?!?! VERYSTORMY
The 457 visa is no different. You can apply regardless. The 2 year rule on 457 visas is just there is romove the need for a skills assessment. However, if you chose to do it permanently it will have consequences as you will never qualify for citizenship and after 4 years your pr would lose the right to enter Australia and you would need a resident return visa which probably would not be granted
Guest mark1066
Thanks for the replys Basicly im not after citizenship but would like PR or the option for PR so by then (If i get it after 2 years) if things change and i wont to settle in Oz i can but for now during my time off from working in my 2 on 2 off FIFO rota i want to spead most my time outside of Oz (Bali/Thailand ect ect) and only come into Oz to work. But what i dont understand is why did someone i know on a 457 visa who applied for PR get knocked back as he spent 50% of time working out of Oz in east timor and 50% living in Oz when not working and another lad i know get PR but he spent 50% living out side of Oz and 50% working in Oz fifo So basilcy i am understanding from these 2 cases that you can work in Oz and on your time off go out the country where you like and you will get PR but you cant live in Oz and work outside of the country and get PR on 457 Visa with in 2 years because this seems to be the case here??!! My plan is to carry on working in Oz but on my off time go travel asia, Could someone please confirm if i do this i will still be able for my PR in 2 years and i am not breaking my 457 visa rules as one agent told me i must still live in Oz when of rota whilst on a 457 visa?!?!?! Guest mark1066
Also for the whole time i will have a Oz address, im paying full Oz tax, have health Ins, medi care card and own a car so on paper i am still classed as not just fully living away when not working but would prob be 60% in county 40% out when not working

Guest guest36187
Just remember PR is not guaranteed. It s not a right after two years. You go through the visa process again. Police checks, medicals if needed, more forms!!!
berto
Hi, mark 1066, sorry just change of subject but I just wondered how you got a Medicare card on a 457? We where told we couldn't have one and spend a fortune with bupa, if we where miss informed and could get it that would be great.

If you are from a country with Reciprocal Medicare - like the UK then you can go straight into one of the offices and sort it out. We are on a 457 and did that and are entitled to Medicare now and have already used it for the kids' injections and skin checks.
berto
That is such good news we have been here 4 months and have spent 1k already and none of us have used it ( thankfully). Well guess what I'm doing first thing tomorrow? Straight to the Medicare office.

Well guess what I'm doing first thing tomorrow? Straight to the Medicare office. Yes it's not very widely advertised. You only *need* the private insurance for the granting of the visa and until you sign up with Medicare. Of course some people choose to carry on with it for shorter waiting times etc. Also you aren't covered for dental, opticians etc on Medicare so some people opt to just have private "extras" for these things. berto
Well even if I get private for extras it will cost me less or should I not bother and just pay for the dentist/ opticians? We'll still have to get ambulance cover though wont we?

I've heard people saying that if you put what you'd pay into insurance into a separate savings account every month, then most people would still save in the long run, but there's no guarantees of course. Where are you? We don't require ambulance cover here in QLD so I don't know much about that.

You can definatly do it. In fact we thought about it as we have lived in asia before and it is a hell of a lot cheaper than living in Oz. I know people that do it and i have an ex boss that did it from Singapore. Its not an issue. As for the friend who got knocked back, my guess would be that he would have failed for some other reason - A 457 offers no certainty of PR
