Anyone have any clue as to how to lodge your tax return?

This is OH's first Aussi tax return, filled in all relevant question but for some reason it won't let him lodge it?!

Says something about shared secret information...Turns out it's so secret he has no idea what it is.

Anyone got any ideas please?

I had the same problem, and I called up the ATO where I was told to try after 2 weeks, since the bank would have possibly not uploaded my data. I tried 1 week later, and was able to lodge my return successfully. Oh and I also got my refund back in 7 days!

When he downloaded the tax form he would have been given a special code number to use when lodging.

Did he enter this and has he made sure the number was correct? IIRC the code is quite long so there is a possibility of error when entering it.

As its his 1st I would suggest seeing an accountant as they will get you back the max, I went to do our 1st online. then went to see an accountant so glad I did because I got far much more back with the accountant then I did when I did it online. Your 1st year tax is usually a pretty good one!

The estimate he got from online was almost all he'd paid, so dont think an accountant would get use much more, but thanks for the suggestion

I have just completed 2 paper ones - one for me and hubby. Was told first one can't be online. Wasn't too bad - only had wages & bupa to fill in. Took me about an hour to go through all the questions thoroughly but felt so pleased t have done it! Will take 6 week to come back and anything back is a bonus! Don't forget we couldn't do this in the UK!!

H&R are the accountants that I used! there was things I didn't think we could claim for as was on 457 that we could, but if you have already got a good estimate from your tax online, then wouldn't waste your money!

Can I just ask if you sent any attachments with your paper return? I know you don't have to when you do it online, but there seems to be a section on the paper one to list attachments, but I can't see anywhere that tells you what you need to attach.

You can't do your first tax return online because they don't have your 'secret information' or something like that that proves who you are.

We filled in the online etax versions and then printed out and posted. We included attachments because we wanted to prove we were infact entitled to the tax free allowance so had to prove residency (so sent in rental agreements etc).

We've heard people mention using a tax specialist, but paying $200+ for the privalidge to do something you can do online seems odd. They may be able to get you more back, but isn't that through lots of 'loop holes'? We've heard stories of people saying they can claim travel expenses without reciepts up to $300 and also for work clothes - when in fact unless you wear a uniform you can't claim for that.

I've read in detail what we are entitled to claim for and we've done that online ourselves, so at least we can be happy we aren't claiming for things we shouldn't be!

We have a good online estimate, but OH can't lodge it as t won't let him so doing it via HR as recommended, 1st year always the hardest so we been told...Hopefully tax return in future years should be a lot easier lol

Make sure you claim for as much as he can, ie..clothing and laundary $300 without reciepts, tools upto $300, all courses/union fees, parking tickets which where work related, travelling deductions - 74cent per km (depends on the litre of car if he has 1). Good luck

Hi sorry to jump in here didn't know how to start a new message ! We moved to Perth end of may from UK do we need to do tax return my fiancé did one from April last year to April this year??

Do I need to do one if I don't work?

You won't need to do one. Your fiance only if he has earned taxable income in Australia from the time of arriving until 30th June or has earned below the limit for taxable income in that time but has had tax taken out which can be refunded to him.

If you are unsure you can use this interactive questionnaire which will let you know if you need to lodge a return.

I did my first one online with no issues two years ago...

Did ours the other week...first timer as well.

At first we got the same "secret question" stuff but tried again the next day and it worked fine with no question appearing.

Refund came through in 7 days....brilliant system, well impressed.

When I called up to get paper copies because I could not lodge online, lady said that company and bank sends them our info. They then add it to system. That covers the secrect information bit. She said they usually get all info in July but can be up to mid August. I will try again to lodge ours mid August just to give them time to add all info on us

That was it...the "pre-filling" part didn't work the first day because it had nothing to download, then popped up the "secret question".

The next day it pre-filled with our earnings and withheld tax information received from the employer, then went through fine.

It could also be it needs a bit of time to check your TFN and let that filter through the system, before it knows who you are. A few of the Aussie gov sites are like that, as is the UK tax lodging system (check back in a few hours etc..).
