Electrician work in or around the Brisbane area?????

Recommended Posts

I'm not an electrician, but I work in civil engineering so we've got some on the books and we contract too. Whenever I see a post about sparkies and plumbers, I always think it's worth pointing out that these are run as closed shops over here. You not allowed to practice until you get local qualifications. You're not even allowed to put a plug on a flex in your own home. This can drive some experienced people nuts. To the extent that they change profession.

I'm assuming you're domestic/light industrial. It has to be said the buiding industry is in the doldrums at the moment. Or, maybe more accurately, the building industry has retreated from it's all time high where you could get serious money for mediocre work. This is probably all for the best, long term. But short term there's going to be a period of readjustment.

If you plan to rock up to a building site and land a job on day one, you might be disappointed. Not least of all because legally you won't be able to touch a screwdriver.

In my opinion, tradesmen who intend to immigrate really need to plan ahead much more than almost any other profession.

Having said that, once you are (legally) qualified, and assuming you're competent, there is always work to be done. Once you get a reputation for a good standard of work and reliability you'll get repeat customers and referrals. We'll be using some of our contractors until they retire.

Thanks for your time and advice, very appreciated. Yea I know it is tough process, I have spent many hours studying and have A licence and Contractors (Just need to set up company and all the insurances etc) I'm thinking I will need to get on with a company at first to learn the ropes before going it alone, will need to make some contacts and get a feel for how it all works there.

I'm just trying to decide between Brisbane or Perth, I know there is tons of work in Perth and keep hearing Brisbane is struggling, and all the trades are moving to Perth. I have never been to Perth before so trying to make a trip over maybe in Sept to both Perth and Brisbane. Thanks again for you.. Steve

No problem. When you say you have a licence do you mean you are registered to work as a sparky already? That's a big hurdle overcome already. Again, I'm not sure, but you might find that you'll need to get recognised for each state you want to work in. Very little here is valid for the whole country. I'd imagine working with an established crew would be a better idea.

The choice between Perth and Brisbane is interesting. Is it better to go to a big city with the expectation that the market is bigger therefore more jobs etc. Or is it better to choose a smaller town, with the expectation that the jobs that there are have fewer people to fill them. Tough call, unless you've already got friends and family in an area to help you out.

I have the A licence for SA as that's where I did the exams. I then got my A licence for WA online. I have since done the contractors course via distance learning for Qld. The problem is, I'm still not sure where we are moving to! The points you raise in your second paragraph are spot on with my way of thinking, we have friends in both, but have never been to Perth. So, just looking for advice.

Thanks............Steve.
