To rent or not to rent - no air con or heating

Hi guys, we just wanted a little bit of advice please. We have found a beautiful house to rent in Baldivis but it does not have any air con or heating. So a quick question for those of you who are already there, would it be daft to take this property for 12 months? We have been assured that the breeze will keep us cool enough during the summer and fans will be sufficient. What do you think? Any advice appreciated

I am sure you will get people saying it will be difficult, not the winter, I have it on good authority that you can buy cheap really good heaters and keep the place warm, but in summer with no air con might be difficult, we went to look round Baldivis and liked it, but it's about 10km in land and I'm not sure it would get the sea breeze there. If you like hot weather, you might get by with buying fans and having them at the side of your bed on a night. Best of luck.

It can get down to around 0 degrees in winter, but as Hoff says you can get a portable heater from somewhere like Big W for around $30

Summer however, it get up towards 38-40 degrees, yes, there is a breeze, but it’s still warm air, so it doesn’t offer that much relief so if you struggle in the UK in summer at 26-28 degrees then you will probably find it uncomfortable

Thamk you both for the advice, The heat here in the UK dosn't really bother me, I do not have trouble sleeping or anything but just worried we won't be able to cope in the height of the summer in OZ.

Is there anyone out there who actually lives in this area who has any hands on experience of it?

I think there is a couple of families on here who live in Baldivis, check out the WA forums posts. We stayed in Port Kennedy for 3 weeks in January one year, the hottest month and the family we stayed with never had the air con on, we were too hot a few nights, not unbearable, most nights we were ok, but they say when you have lived there a few years you get used to it.

We are in Brissy but when in the rental only had ceiling fans and we managed fine. Even now in our own house we only use fans and dont bother with the air con.

When it was chilly we used plug in oil heaters or panel heaters and it was suffice.. Now we have the wood fire so all is good.

I live in Brissie and the humidity was awful sometimes, when we only had one air con in the back room. The kids really struggled and we ended up buying a portable.

All fans do is push the warm air around..

We do use the heater when it gets really cold but not that often.

You can buy portable units if you find its too much :)

We always said since, we would never have another rental without air con.

Hi we live just down the road from Baldivis but closer to the coast. We could not have managed without air con it would have killed us. However just to confuse things, I know some that do manage, but me no way no how would I move somewhere without aircon, and Baldivis does not have the same breeze as the coast.

Hiya

We're in Perth NOR, we've been here nearly a year, and I have to say last Summer the Air con was in overdrive. We had three sets of visitors from the UK, and all struggled to sleep without the air con on (we're not paying) Also, recently we've had the reverse cycle air con on in the morning and evening, no double glazing and some doors that don't fit properly. It really is subjective, some cope with heat and cold better than others, but I guess this has to be balanced against what the house offers and the cost involved.

We're the same no heating or air con at the moment it's a couple of halogen heaters and the duvet it's fine and in the summer we have a portable air con unit which also works a treat. Still warm but much more bearable.

We were always told keep your blinds windows eyc shut until early afternoon to keep the heat out and then when the breeze blows open them up. Works for us and were about 10 miles up from baldivis.

Def air con and heating if poss.....I remember in jan and feb this year it was 31.c at 11pm....only dropped down to 21/22.c over night!! The air con kept us sane.

If there are ceiling fans then all you will need is a few fans dotted around the place, the ore powerful the better to be honest and one in at least every room. It is hard in Summer without aircon...for me at least! I like to feel comfortable....once it gets over 36 or so and humid though youve had it even with the aircon if its evaporative....best place is the beach or the back yard pool...do not underestimate the power of the intex pool if your rental hasnt got one!

NOR here, currently typing this outside having a cig and shivering with the cold!

House has ducted aircon and heating and also a wood fire stove. If it ain't turned on the house is freezing!! The build quality over here is pretty bad compared to Ireland & the UK i.e they don't have double glazing or insulate very well.

Make sure you ave some sort of heating for the winter
