POLICE are hunting for a gang of 10 balaclava clad thugs who bashed a teenager in Perth's southern suburbs at the weekend with pool cues, baseball bats and hockey sticks.

The 17-year-old victim known as Jimi was so badly assaulted he has been left with bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull.

He and three friends were walking along Safety Bay Road in Warnbro near the Gull petrol station just before 11pm on Saturday night when three cars containing 10 males parked around the corner, got out of their vehicles wielding baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs and sticks before running towards the group of mates and attacking them with the weapons for up to two minutes.

Jimi is in Royal Perth Hospital with a fractured skull, facial injuries, bruising to the brain and right elbow.

He is in a stable condition.

Another one of his mates received minor injuries and the remaining two managed to run off and escape injury.

Disturbing CCTV images captured from a nearby business near where the attack happened has been released today by police.

It shows the armed thugs clearly wearing balaclavas and bandanas over their faces and holding an assortment of weapons.

Police today described the shocking attack as unprovoked and random.

“From what we see of the security footage, there appears to be absolutely no motive for it,” Detective Senior Constable Mark Balenzuela said.

“There is certainly no justification for anything like this.

“It seems to be a random act.

“The fact they are willing to arm themselves with these weapons is a particular concern.”

Jimi’s dad Andrew, who has lived in the area for 15 years, said seeing his son in hospital with such shocking injuries had been an awful experience.

He said his son - an active young man who enjoyed rugby and mountain bike riding - had been attacked just a few hundred metres from home.

“Who goes driving around with baseball bats looking to attack people?” Andrew said.

“It's unacceptable behaviour really.”

The gang of 10 thugs arrived and left in three cars.

One is believed to be a late model Ford Falcon while the other is a large dark blue sedan.

A description of the third car has not been made available.

Police would also like to speak to several people who came to the assistance of the group after the attack.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

ONE of the six youths charged over the savage gang bashing of Warnbro teenager Jimi Brewer-Joyce has been granted bail.

Three 19-year-olds - Dimitar Dimov of Midland, Imran Assad of Cloverdale and Abdul Latif Ahmed Hafza of Bassendean - appeared separately at the dock in Rockingham Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Each has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Mr Assad and Mr Hasza were both refused bail but Mr Dimov was granted bail conditional on a $20,000 personal undertaking and $20,000 surety.

As part of his bail conditions, Mr Dimov must surrender his passport and must not come within 10km of the Rockingham post office, must not contact any alleged victims and must abide by a 7pm to 7am curfew.

The court heard Mr Dimov, a TAFE student, does not have a criminal record.

However, in opposing bail, the prosecutor told the court that both Mr Assad and Mr Hafza have criminal records and were involved in a brawl outside the Hungry Jacks restaurant in the Perth CBD with another group of youths in October last year.

For that they were charged with an unlawful assembly, the court heard.

The court was also told that Mr Assaad, who is three years into an apprenticeship, has a conviction for assault occasioning bodily harm, which stems from a fight in the Murray Street mall in July last year, during which a young man was kicked and punched whilst he was on the ground.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Hope-Hume told the court the assault in Warnbro on July 21 was a “random attack” and it would be alleged that all of the accused did not know any of the alleged victims.

“The accused and the co-offenders planned to locate a party with a view of assaulting the occupants with the weapons they had brought with them,” Sgt Hope-Hume said.

“This is as random attack as you will get.

“It is our position there is no association whatsoever…the victim could have been any person.”

Sgt Hope-Hume opposed bail for all three of the 19-year-old accused men, saying there was a potential for them to interfere with witnesses and those still sought by police over the matter.

Defence lawyer Rhett Williamson who represented Mr Dimov and Mr Assaad argued both of clients could abide by bail through curfew’s and by residing at home with their families.

He added because his clients were “strangers” to the alleged victims, there was no chance that they could interfere with them.

After hearing the statement of material facts of the Warnbro assault, Magistrate Denis Temby said he was “extremely concerned” with the allegations.

Mr Hafza’s lawyer Brian Mahon told the court he too was concerned with the allegations levelled at his client but cast doubt as to whether the attack was indeed random.

In denying bail for Mr Hafza, a plumbing apprentice, Magistrate Temby said: “I see this man as an unacceptable risk of reoffending.”

Outside court Mr Williamson said his two clients would be defending the charges. All three men will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on September 6.

Juvenile accused appear in court

Earlier the other three alleged offenders, who are all aged under 18, were remanded in custody after appearing in court.

The three, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been in custody since their arrest yesterday, along with the three 19-year-olds.

No application for bail was made for any of the trio and they were remanded in custody to appear again in the Perth Children's Court next Thursday.

The six young men have been charged over the attack with left Jimi, 17, with serious injuries including bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull.

Police will allege 17-year-old Jimi Brewer-Joyce and three friends were walking along Safety Bay Road in Warnbro near the Gull petrol station just before 11pm on July 21 when three cars containing 10 young men parked around the corner.

The alleged attackers got out of their vehicles wielding baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs and sticks before running towards the group of mates and attacking them.

Jimi Brewer-Joyce bore the brunt of the attack, suffering life-threatening injuries. He is still recovering and continues to have dizzy spells.
