Perth and parts of southern WA have shivered through the coldest morning of the year so far, with temperatures dropping well below zero in some areas. The coldest temperature in the State was recorded at Northam, about 100km north-east of Perth, where the mercury dropped to -4.3C at 7.24am.The second coldest spot was at Meckering, with -3.2C recorded at 5.22am, and -2.7C was recorded nearby at Cunderdin.Perth’s coldest temperatures were recorded at Wanneroo, where temperatures sunk to -2.1C at 7.12am, and Jandakot, where they fell to -1.6C at 5.39am.:dull:

Apparently, Canberra's had the coldest run of July nights for 47 years this month, but there's not been a single day that I'd consider "winter"....the skies are normally clear and sunny by 10am after some morning mist or a crisp night.

The last winter i spent in the UK, my car was abandoned for 3 days on a public car park because of snow which the council just didn't bother preparing for, the trains into Birmingham were running a skeleton service and were pulling in already packed to the rafters so you couldn't physically get on one, or the buses were taking 2.5 hours to crawl 13 miles and were either freezing inside, or so hot and steamed up that condensation was streaming down the insides of the windows.....you were guaranteed to catch a cold off someone. Shudder.

I think south Birmingham went down to -17, plus there was a wind chill on top which cut straight through to the bone and you could barely open your eyes to it.

Then when i got to work, the cheap gits had previously set the boiler down to the minimum level to save money on heating bills, so people were already working in their coats....and when they tried to turn the boiler up too fast after protests, the thing just packed up altogether so people just went home until it was fixed.

Hence I always step outside with a smile here and remember how bad it could be.

Yes, spot on.

Plus it's a dry cold here (as can be the north Highlands)....it's that damp or wet UK cold that spreads colds and seeps into everything.

I remember my old boss spent a winter north of Inverness in the forces, cut off from everyone except his little team manning a weather station with snow up to the top of the door and 10 ft drifts, he lived there all winter in sub-zero temps and didn't fall ill once.

As soon as he returned down South in spring to the wet snivelling cold and germs he caught pneumonia and was off for months....

i can cope with a dry cold but hate the damp type that you mentioned. I was almost crying when it was that cold lol was horrible! we were staying in a rental that wasnt very well insulated and we were spending a fortune on heating which just seemed a waste of time! loads of peoples pipes froze aswell. So even though you acclimatize to the heat so you find the winters cold hopefully i'll just remember how cold i was back then  Its the same with snow - people say they miss a proper snowy xmas when they live abroad. The xmas card scenery type is nice but its no fun when your snowed in at xmas and the roads are death traps etc. Baahumbug lol. Give me a sunny xmas for a year or two, it'll make a nice change!
