Trisha32
Hi all, My husband and I are moving to Canberra in October this year. We are really excited about the move but as Londoners ( essentially big city kids  ) we are somewhat daunted about moving to a smaller city that we know next to nothing about. My husband and I are in our 30s, without kids, and are looking to rent in areas of Canberra which are close to the centre ( inner north or inner south), multicultural (Ben's Danish and I am Indian), close to bars/pubs ( it'd be nice to have our own 'local' and meet new people for a drink after work), and homes which are in the more salubrious part of town. We just want a nice apartment in a nice area that will remind us of the big smoke:biggrin: My husband will work in Woden though transport isn't an issue as we are thinking of public transport and/or buying a car. But yes, we do want something central(ish). Can you all recommend where we should be looking for houses? Many thanks! Trisha

sunniecat
I'm afraid Canberra won't remind you of London at all... you may have to make regular trips to Sydney for that! It's only a 3 hour drive/busride Canberra is basically a series of suburbs joined together with a few 'high rises' in civic where the office blocks are. If you want to be somewhere even close to lively, I would suggest looking first at areas around Manuka/Kingston, or otherwise inner north, I don't know that side so well, but would definitely go for places close to Civic if you want to be near the bars (O'Conner, Turner, Braddon, Dickson and maybe Ainslie). The other inner south suburbs are definitely suburban feel, they are lovely, really nice areas - and expensive. Not so good for bars, same goes for Woden (where we are). For an idea of rental prices, look at http://www.allhomes.com.au but you can't rent houses until you've viewed them and applied in person, so you'll need to spend at least a couple of weeks in a short-term rental, you can use that time to explore the areas and decide where you want to live. Come on over to the ACT forum and say hi, people there will be able to give you some good thoughts.
Slean Wolfhead
Canberra. lol I hope you like the cold. It's not cold if you're from the UK and have some vitality...I can imagine older people might find the temperature drop at night a problem in winter, but a young couple shouldn't have any problem with temperatures going to -5 in winter, it's not as if it's pouring with rain at the same time. It's the 2nd sunniest place in Australia, and one of the driest in normal circumstances....but with 2 wet years behind it, the reservoirs are full so no water supply problems for the next 6-8 years. The issue with cold, is also because it's so sunny and close to mountains in the South and West ....cloudless days lead to cloudless nights with a myriad of stars, but the warm air convects away quickly when the sun drops in winter, due to the mountains. It's a spectacular place to live, but not like London at all.
