loveshellybeach
Like many Brits we collect tesco club card vouchers and use them for days out, restaurants, travel etc... Is there an oz equivalent to this scheme that we should look out for when we arrive?
thombatt
Not sure how similar they are but quite a few credit cards have reward points for using them. I estimate the on we use gives us an effective 1% discount on each purchase. There is also flybuys flybuys.com.au

Guest ComingDownUnder
We collect the Woolworths Everyday Rewards points (at Woolworths which is the supermarket, Big W - where we get a lot of our baby items and toiletries etc and there are a few other stores linked to it too). I am currently collecting them linked to my Qantas Frequent Flyer account. We don't have a car at the moment so we swap the fuel coupons for FF points too. As calNgary said, can can swap them through the FF shop too for a whole range of things. One thing I would mention to do with days out/meals etc is that you will be surprised by the amount of stuff to do here which is free, costs very little or is discounted through various promotions. Our energy supplier give us a whole heap of discounts and freebies via a little booklet, such as 30% off at such-and-such restaurant, free sides at Nandos, free game of bowling... We live in Melbourne and were out with the children on Friday evening to watch the fireworks at Docklands (which, incidentally, are free!) and there was a guy there from the Medibank Icehouse giving out complimentary tickets to the AIHL game on Sunday so we went along to watch the ice hockey for nothing. Great day out, the children loved it too. The same guy was also giving out 50% vouchers for ice skating that are valid until the end of December. Waffled on a bit there, sorry, but you get my point : )
northshorepom
This is the land of the discount voucher/scheme so you won't be short of options They're everywhere.....from 40% off stocktake sales, to 4c off a litre of petrol if you show your supermarket receipt, to flybuys/frequent flyer points, to Entertainment books, to "member's clubs" with 10% off if you hand over your e-mail address and accept spam, to......etc etc etc I can't be doing with it personally. Would prefer retailers just dropped their headline prices to reflect the stronger dollar rather than offer endless and varying discounts (and at the same time whinge about people not paying the inflated original price), would prefer if the petrol "discount" was just readily applied in the first place (in reality what they do is just artifically jack the price so you think you're getting a saving), etc etc etc.
Bobbsy
Despite the multiplicity of voucher schemes, there's no direct equivalent to the Tesco version. However, the most useful for us is that supermarket "points" give you a discount on your petrol--Woolworths with their own/Caltex stations and Coles with Shell. The basic discount is 4 cents a litre but double points (i.e. 8 cents a litre) are fairly common--and it makes a decent difference every fill up. The best rewards scheme I've ever found is a small local Chemist (Malouf Group if you live anywhere near). Their prices aren't bad already but it works out to a $10 coupon for every $100 you spend...or, if you're over 55 like me...it only takes a $50 spend to get $10 back. Since they're already slightly cheaper than the other chemist near me, it's win/win.

desreb
Yep, there's generally fewer freebies in Oz than for UK, as less competition. We have both Coles Flybuys and Woolworth's Reward cards. I've heard from Lifehacker that Flybuys are almost worthless now - less than 0.5% back on your cash, effectively. http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/05/why-the-new-flybuys-is-a-rip-off/. By all means collect the points, but don't expect much more than a nice toaster at the end of the year. Getting an affiliated credit card will help boost that too. I'm not sure if Woolworth's is any better, but at least you get Qantas points, where every little helps :-). With some work flights and a big Jetstar credit card free points offer, plus using it for almost all purchases, all going into Q points, I nearly have enough points for a flight back to the UK. It's just a bonus tho - I don't think you can really "work" the points as hard as you can in the UK/US.
