Mining with- No experience

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at immigrating to kalgoorlie western Australia in January, with thehope of getting into the mining industry.

I’m 29 years of age with 11 years experience as a mechanical design engineer in building services specialising in Heating, ventilation, Air conditioning design.

I’m aware these skills probably won’t mean anything in the mining industry so I’m prepared to start at the bottom with no experience and work my way up.

Are there anything certificates I could get here in the UK (Liverpool) that would benefit my chances of employment more in anyway?

Would doing the following courses below or any others help before I arrive inKalgoorlie in January?

Forkliftlicense – Consolidated Training Services do a one day course

Senior First Aid – St Johns ambulance

Four Wheel drive and Defensive driving

Elevated Work Platform (EWP)

I’m fully aware its not what you know but who you know, hence why I’m arriving in January to beat down every door and speak to as many people as possible till I get my footin the door, failure isn’t an option.

Thanks in advance guys, any advice is more than welcome

Hi.

I'm also a mechanical design engineer although my experience lies in automotive assembly robotics and electrical product design. Are you degree qualified?

If you are, its worth getting your skills assessed by Engineers Australia. Depending on which university you went to you may have to do a CDR (essay on your career history).

Once you have completed skills assessment with EA you can then become a member which seems to go a long way in Australia.

You will probably be able to pick up work in Kal. Your best bet are jobs as drillers offsider as mines themselves do not take on many WHV as the training process / inductions and things means its just not worth taking some one for only 6 months. They do occaisionaly and i started a young brit WHV this week. But, it is VERY rare. Long term, i would say your chances of gaining sponsorship are very slim. There are no shortage of applicants from locals who want the work. I would therefore assume you are not emmigrating but are coming on a holiday.

Be prepared that roles such as drilling offsider are damned hard work. Very physical, pretty dull (On an RC rig, it involves running between the rig and a area 10m away with sample bags, putting a new bag on the sample exit. Repeat for 12 hours a day in 40+ heat). The money isnt all that great either.

This is of course on the assumption we dont see much more down turn in exploration. At present there is a marked downturn, but still a reasonable amount of work.

Sorry replying to Goochie

I'm qualifiedto HNC level but most of all it’s the experience which I have on my side nogood having a degree if you can’t complete the most basic tasks, something I’veseen a lot with our new starts.

Will becoming amember of the Australian Engineers benefit me in any way with my visa orgetting sponsorship?

My occupation is currently shown on the skilledoccupation list something I was over the moon about till I see the price forthe skilled migrant visa, ouch.

Sorry guys new to this i get it now reply with quote

Very Stormy

Yes I am emigratingwith the hope of staying for good so I’ll be doing my best to make sure I canstay legally.

I fully aware I’ll have to start at the bottom and it won’t be pretty but if istick at it and work hard hopefully I’ll get to were i want to be.

It would also be handy if my current occupation/ skill could be used in any wayto benefit me in this game in the future as it would be a shame to toss itaway.

Also on the flip side theres plenty of work in building services in perth at the moment so if things didnt work out i could alway go back into this.

If you're looking for a sponsored visa, membership of EA will be purely optional but may make it more likely that you'll find something.

If you want a skilled migrant visa, EA will have to assess your skills/qualification as part of that process and once completed, you can apply for membership very easily on the back of that assessment.

Have a look at the EA website, it is pretty good.

They have a few booklets you can download which will help explain the different options.

If you are working as a general hand or offsider in mining then i would say that your chances of sponsorship are tiny. Dont forget, the role still has to be on the CSOL list. The employer has to establish that the reason they are sponsoring is because they cant find a local to do the job. There is no shortage of unskilled Ozzies trying to get into the industry.

As for construction in Perth. You might want to have a look at the perthnow website. There was an article this week on how construction trades are struggling. House building has been in the doldrums for a few months now.

Without a degree, i would also say the chances of picking up work as an engineer is slim.

The best advice i can give is to come out with the knowledge that you are on holiday. Not migrating.
