As did birmingham . what images shocked you in birmingham that will stay with you for the rest of your life...honesty what?
jove
what images shocked you in birmingham that will stay with you for the rest of your life...honesty what? Well i went to see some houses to rent in Bham, I cant remember the name but it could of been close to winston green. I kid you not the the place looked like a war zone. Burnt out cars, boarded up windows on houses(presumably brokeninto), burnt out houses! Huge gangs of yyouths hanging around the tram stop. I honestly did not feel safe in that neighbourhood. It was very scary Though to be fair i am sure there are place like that in Sydney too. Edited July 24, 2012 by jove

You will be glad to know it is not like that anymore, abondened cars are no more as they are worth at least £100 in tat value, I have worked in that part of brum and honestly do not see what you have seen strangely enough. p.s...have you seen some of the dumps in Holland? paulv
Statistically it is higher than either the UK or the USA per head of the population. But per head of population isn't comparing like for like. Is it higher per head of 'Muslim' population?

It happens the world over, you get influxes of ethnic migrants, they carry on with the breeding program as is there way, you soon have a full house, trouble is they let it run down as is there way as other things take a priority with them. thewebweazel
Here we go again, being told that we have to assimilate in to the society of the host nation, why should anybody care as long as the law of the land is followed and taxes are paid? Who cares if there are ghettos of other nationalities or cultures, what harm does it do to anyone? Just carry on living the way that best suits you. Why should the woman that chooses to wear a burkah be forced to remove it just because there are some that feel that it doesn't fit in. Nobody is being forced to socialise with her. The idea that everyone needs to speak the same language, wear the same type of clothes, have the same religion, follow the same traditions is frankly absurd, never mind the fact that it would be a pretty bland society. The problem with western world and especially the English world is that we consider the rest of the world to be inferior and backwards. Maybe if we didn't take this stance we might not have our flags burnt and attacks made against us? Are we not enlightened and educated enough to realise that we are all equal and by not treating our fellow man equally we are jeopardising or right to be treated equally Edited July 24, 2012 by thewebweazel

Maybe if we didn't take thisstance we might not have our flags burnt and attacks made against us? I dont get the feeling they look at the rest of the world as backward. You are free to worship whatever religion you choose or say whatever you want. Many people that emmigrate to the west craze such freedoms. Your example of Burkas, recently Muslim Canadian women petitioned parliment to get burkas banned because they fled to Canada to get away from that sort of backwards cultural imperalism which is imposed on them by relgious edicts or community 'elders'. I think immigrants dont really appreciate the cultural differences of the their adopted country before making the move and sadly has the potential to make things worse. As to the flag burning. What is your point? A lot of this flag burning has nothing to do with the west. A recent good example was with those Mohammed cartoons - people were burning flags and many people died globally over the cartoons and some pictures that were taken from agricultural magizines (which had nothing to do with religion). The clerics that publicised these pictures were immigrants to france i think seeking protection from the egyptian government but instead sought to cause as much globally conflict and strife as possible Edited July 24, 2012 by jove

Guest Andy
Why is it ok to accept the rules and customs of some countries but everyone gets so offended when people coming to the UK are asked to the same? I agree, if a white English woman were to go and live in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia she would rightly be expected to follow the law of the land or face the consequences, if she went over there expecting to live like she did in England or America then she would be in trouble, she would not be able to wander around with her jugs hanging out now would she? Si T
Well each to their own but you totally missed my point and jumping on the negative (I guess you live there) but are obviously not as educated as you make out to be.Im not self righteous nor do I avoid brits as you imply. I also dont what qualifications you have - what do I care. I also have a degree but dont go around telling that fact to people soon as someone ruffles my feathers, you can still be a chav who has a degree. I just dont see the point in living somewhere its 90% british unless living in the UK, I dont want to live in Britian and i dont forget where I'm from, how can you unless you have total memory loss? I have been there and found it too far away from Perth and the brits who do live there do because its just cheaper to buy a house than in town. I have lived in many more countries than just Australia and currently live outside the UK, I dont need a security blanket of britishness............ The reason I jumped on the negative was because there was a strong implication that because you have tattoo's and play/support football you must be a thug. I was responding to a number of previous comments and the only one which was aimed at you was the reference to moving so far away and then surrounding ourselves with Brits. You also now follow it up with a generalisation about those of us who live in the Northern Suburbs not being able to afford houses in the city. Insults of demographic groups seem be your thing. Yes, you were being self righteous. I have found a number of comments on here and other expat sites from people who think that they have to come to a new country and avoid British people. It seems to make them feel as if they are really taking the whole migration process to heart and living like the locals. This does not apply to all people who live in areas with few people from their home nation, just the ones who are self righteous about it. The only reason I commented on my qualifications was to make the point that you can't always look at someone and make an assumption about them. The assumption was that if I was in The Boat, with tattoos and a football shirt on I must be a thug, I was simply trying to point out that there is more to people than how you would see them. Seems as if you are the one who misses the point of peoples posts my friend. Personally I couldn't really care whether you think I am well educated or not but do me one favour and make sure that what you have written reads properly before you comment upon my level of education. Oh well, back to my security blanky. My original post was a response to a number of posts and didn't single anyone in particular. It was also intended to be a bit of a lighthearted p**s take which seemed to have gone so far over your head you couldn't see the bottom of it. Your's was made directly to me with a few not very veiled insults thrown into the mix. Whose feathers were ruffled? Petals
Referring to the post by thewebweazel and its off topic but close to my heart, the woman who "chooses" to wear a burkah should be able to. However not many women choose to, its usually at their husband's insistance so other men cannot look at her. They want their children to have the freedom of the west but unfortunately if they try to live a different life they are alienated by their families. On topic, if Brits want to mix with Brits that is ok, we just moved over, got a place to live and went with the flow, and of course affordability did come into it as it does with most ordinary people like us. Guest guest17301
I find it to be very disturbing that people even consider that the nationality of a persons friends is even relevant...so what if people have all pom mates...so what if theyre all aussies...I doubt very much anyone greets potential mates with a...and your nationality please? Before striking them off the list....the friends we make are purely by chance imo.....if we happen to work with a lot of poms...our mates will be poms....if we get to know aussies through school, work, play....we may make friends with them...why the hell does it even matter? I think its a bit sniffy to deliberately avoid other poms in an effort to integrate. You mix with whomever crosses your path simples....stop overthinking it. flag of convenience
What about this lot, would you afford them the same leeway? "I personally would deport anyone who sought sanctuary then continued with their hatreds and bigotries. " I would equate it to something akin to football rivals like Chelsea playing Spurs than anything sinister. Down the road from me is the Yugal Club of WA. It was more a Serb meeting place in the past but am told it is now a meeting place for all the ex Yugoslav states.
