Hi Lee

Medicare I think is when you pay a reduced fee to cover certain medical options, ie: doctors ambulances.

But i do not think it covers the wider scale so taking out private medical insurance is advised.

Any news yet

Hi Lee

From what I've read, if you arrive in Australia on any sort of visa that grants you Permanent Residence, Medicare will be expecting to hear from you, because DIMA arranges that for you as part of the service. (They also sing to the Australian Tax Office, tho!)

Being on Medicare is the same as the NHS here. The doc and the scrip are both free, and you can get the scrip filled for the same price as a born & brought up Australian with a job. I have heard $29 AU mentioned though, which seems expensive compared to here. I'm not convinced about this $29. It sounds too high to me.

I reckon the thing to do is to re-post your questions on the Lifestyle and Culture forum on British Expats. Somebody already out there is bound to be able to give you a reliable answer.

I've also heard that emergency ambulances are not free in Australia. Which seems weird as well. There was a suggestion on BE a few months ago that you have to ask for ambulance cover as part of any medical insurance that you buy, and to pay extra for the ambulance cover. Again, I'm not convinced.

If you decide to investigate and you get some reliable answers, please could you let us all know?

Many thanks

Gill

I've heard it advisable to take out extra medical insurance, or you get faced with an extra tax bill. It's a few years ago now, but my brother got stung with this in his first year and soon took out the extra cover.

Yes. I've heard this too but as yet I don't know anything about it. I believe that it is called the Medicare Levy and that it gets added on to Income Tax. Quite a hefty tax, I believe, and unpopular because of it.

The info about it should be on http://www.ato.gov.au which is the Australian Tax Office website.

I am sure I have read ABC Diamond mention payment for ambulance cover through council rates. Will try and check this out and post back.

If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place...

If you get a chance, take it, If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy they just said it would be worth it...
