The IT field Thread

Hi all, need your advice guys as I could see quite . Have been looking for a job for 6 months in Perth and still no success. I'm an IT analyst with extensive international experience (more than 12 years). The areas of expertise is business requirements, process modelling, enterprise-wide applications such as documentation management system, implementation, testing and training, that is almost all phases of SDLC except for coding and unit testing. Gained several interviews since Christmas, one was completely a disaster as after several stages and even checking my references I was pointed to cultural misfit (not sure about the real reason), then was definitely overqualified for the second one and finally secured a position in the government but it's just a pool and who knows when it will really work out. Doing a volunteer job within my area for a small not-for-profit company, entered several associations, visiting local professional meetups, catching up over coffee, approaching managers directly, making a lot of connections in LinkedIn, doing many other things outside to get access to the hidden market as I know WA is all about who knows you. I don't want to bother you with all those details but everything seems useless. People readily meet, give recommendations, promise to keep an eye on opportunities and nothing happens. The current _open_ market is dead, I can see only 2-3 positions per week and 200-300 applications per position according to my friend from a HR agency. Looking at Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane currently but don't know whether they're better to get my foot in the door though. Ready to start with a lower position provided that it's related to my skills.

Hi user9999

I feel your pain (have posted a few times in this forum, no need to repeat). I am in Melbourne and the number of applications probably applies here too. However, the quality of those is unknown, as it is so easy to apply these days. The problem is, you get lost in the noise. I spent some time researching and have asked agencies I talk to if they use automatic screening (lots of articles on LinkedIn), but they appear not to in Aus. However, the 2 minute bin it rules do still apply (not going to list any they are fairly public).

You have some pretty standard experience (I mean in a good way), but also it is fairly generic and may not stand out. You are going about it in a good way regarding the networking (something I don't really do). Advertised jobs probably offer the worst chance of success. I have spent a lot of time (of which I have plenty) researching on the 'how to' for cover letter, resume and tried a couple of different ways. But usually the advice is US based, or conflicting (eg put all experience, keep it short, use buzz words, don't use them). If an agent or recruiter can be bothered to talk to me they do tend to say my application was good enough and usually only suggest a couple of changes (again sometimes conflicting with other advice).

I am also seeing a new worrying trend where as soon as I apply I get an instant reject email. This has directly referred to my age (see earlier post), but now I have got a couple saying ' we have exceeded our quota of applications'. I long for the good old days when the companies had to do the chasing, it would be nice to be able to treat them with the same lack of respect and consideration.

We are just moving house, so taking a break and hoping in a couple of weeks I can find inspiration to get back into it after a recharge of batteries.

Just remember, it only takes one.

Agencies can often only submit a limit of two candidates per role. If you're told they're at limit, search for other agencies with the role (in Brisbane the role goes to loads of 'em). If they haven't reached their quota you may be considered. What a pantomime this is!

Thanks for the response. Just to add to your money box if you haven't already come across these ones:

- Find your next job in 1 day by Rick Gillis, very good for resume preparing

- What Colour is your Parachute by Richard Bolles, a precious source of interview behaviour ideas

2 minute bin it rule is too good to be truth. According to the recent investigations it has transformed into 20 sec.

I hear what you are saying and agency bad practice does not surprise me. Unfortunately the applications I mentioned were direct to companies.

Just been approached by a recruiter for a Filemaker Developer job for Localsearch based in Robina, QL. I have a Skype interview lined up for next week. It would be great to secure job before moving to Aus but just want to make sure it's a good company etc. Anyone heard of them and know them to be a good company to work for? Cheers, V

Anyone working in Brisbane at the moment ? What is the market like for application support type roles ? Not helpdesk/level 1 roles but more specialised, eg financial sector...

Hi N1ck as nobody has replied, it says it all.

Brisbane is not easy for IT generally and application support is too generic unless you have specialised skills

Finance is fairly generic, I worked for a year at AMP in Sydney in finance enterprise level support as SME.

I have been trying from Melbourne and only had one phone interview in 18 months.

I see you have Sydney in your profile, so some people say you should leave address off as it just presents another hurdle, but any interview might have logistical problems.

I am generally the bringer of doom and gloom if you read my previous posts in this thread.

Trying not to get miserable about it so don't reply so much.

Been a year since my last IT job and mostly applying in Melbourne without success.

Currently working in Coles as a casual!

Hi Nick,

I don't know about the broader question of demand level but if it is any help our company (a financials software house) has around 18 vacancies in Brisbane spread over these roles if it gives you any idea of current demand areas. Vacancies exist in other cities as well.

Hello everyone,

My fiance and I are looking into moving to Melbourne. We are hesitating because of the housing prices and the job market. Could you tell me how the job market currently is for developers? I put my husbands details below because I know that there is a lot of difference between jobs (and I am an IT dummie :) ). Are all the available jobs in the CBD? Is it doable to live in a cheaper (but nice) suburb further away without having to commute for more than an hour?

Software developer, frameworks, engines, desktop applications, databases, websites, high performance, system design, cross platform, distributed computing.

Specialties: C++, C#, PHP, SQL, EcmaScript, Windows, Linux, OS X, BSD, SQL, Qt, VCL, .NET4.5, Pascal, TCP/IP, UML, WCF, Linq, WPF, ORM, jQuery, ASP.NET MVC4, Silverlight, MVVM, iOS, Objective C, Java, Android. (he really dislikes working with java though)

I would really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

I think with those skills he should be able to find a role reasonably quickly assuming he interviews well. Saying that, a lot of experienced candidates are finding it hard to find work in Melbourne. The market is dead, and that combined with very high house prices could be a toxic mix.

As Parleycross says, most tech jobs are in the CBD, but there are little clusters here and there. It should be possible to find reasonably priced suburb within 1 hour of the CBD, but to be honest house prices anywhere near Melbourne are high so you would definitely need to compromise on some things. Do you have any kids?

Thank you for your replies. We have a bun in the oven ;). We would probably be looking at house prices around 450.000 dollars. We don't have to be near the beach but somewhere in east Melbourne would be preferable because my family lives there. I know my partner is really good at his job but I dont know if he interviews well.

Please disregard any spelling mistakes, it's been a long time since I wrote in English.

Median house prices in Melbourne are about $700k, so this would only be doable a bit further out unless you would be happy to consider a flat. The eastern suburbs are pricy even by Melbourne standards, so may not even be possible on one income without a substantial deposit. What are you OH's salary expectations?

Hi All, Ive been in Melbourne 7 weeks now and not even had a sniff of an interview, how long do you give it before you take temp work or work outside your specialised field just to stop spending your savings? (hypo question, I know each persons situation if different)

BTW Im an IT Systems Analyst, SharePoint Developer (unfortunately in very low demand and they are requiring a very precise skillset), IT Business Analyst if anyone knows of anything going in the Melbourne are or inner suburbs ;)

because the bureaucrats take a while to catch-up, and IT is probably one of the worst hit as skills are very specialised whereas the job titles are rather broad.

The last time I did programming it was COBOL, yet I could emigrate as an analyst programmer but I wouldn't fancy my chances in getting a job!

I'd say you should expect it to take 3-6 months to find work so if after that you haven't I would start to take anything - of course if you did not come with enough savings for 3-6 months then you may be forced to do so sooner.

If possible take a lower skilled job in your field to get a foothold rather than shelf stacking in Coles but needs must..

The market isn't dead.

It's pretty slow here in Brisbane. Contract vacancies much reduced by the change of Govt. V few large projects starting up as far as I know which impacts demand for BA's, Change Managers. Architects seem to do OK.

I work because I have a great relationship with a consulting company who keep me supplied with small projects but think it would be really tough out there on my own. Big difference (drop) in number of calls I get from recruiters compared to even a year ago..
