Hello Everyone Out There Thats In The Same Position As I Am! Lol

My Name Is Ffion And Im 12 :)

Well I Found Out A Month Ago And Ever Since Then Ive Hated The Idea About Living In Australia.

I Have SOOO Many Freinds Here And It Will Be Soo Hard Leaving Them As I Have Only Just Got To Know Them As Im In Year 8 At Secondry School. It Still Hasnt Sunk In Yet That Im Moving And Im Finding It Hard To Come Around To The Idea.

Im Worried About Making Freinds As Im Not To Good At That Sorta Thing If You Know What I Mean. Just Worried That Ill Be Lonely At School And If Ill Get Bullied 'Cus Im From England :(

So Any Of Advice I Would Be So Grateful! And If Anyones Goin Through What I Am Would Love To Hear From You! :v_SPIN:

Thankyou Love Ffion X

Hi Ffion

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Ali is one of the ladies who helps to look after the forum. Her daughter Alex is 12 and they live in Perth. they have been there for just under a year ad Alex loves it. I'n sure that is you send lAi a prrivate message, she will arrange for you and Alex to keep in touch with each other until you get there.

You won't be bullied either at school or outside of school and nobody will think you are strange because you have arrived form the UK. They'll think it is cool, Ffion, I promise you. All the schools around Perth have newcomers from all over the world joining their new schools almost every week.

If you enjoy water sports and amazing marine wildlife, have a look at this link and then twist Mike's arm about your school holidays....

Exmouth, Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef - Tours

Further north is Monkey Mia which is also fantastic:

Search - Tourism Western Australia

The dolphins really do come right up to you. The Rangers sell buckets of fish to feed to teh dolphins. Unfortuately we got there too late to buy one but the lady standing next to me the line had a bucket of fish. One of the dolphns swam along th line, eyeing us all up.

It smiled up at me but when it saw I had no fish, it moved on. I swear that that dolpin winked and waved a flipper at me, just to let me know it was nothing personal!

You've seen loads of white swans with yellow beaks. In Perth, there are black swans with coral-pink beaks. They are the State Emblem of WA and they really are fantastically beautiful.

Rottnest Island is the only place in the world where you will find quokkas, which are like miniature wallabies.

Ali's daughter Alex is into horses and goes riding regularly, by the way, but I am crazy about anything to do with the sea and water geerally. I don't know anything about riding in WA but Ali & Alex could tell you about that.

I could go on and on.....

Cheers

Hi Ffion

Happy Christmas ad I'm delighted to hear you got so many prezzies (and all that luvveryly loot.)

Yes, the wildlife in WA is really amazing and the sea - being the Indian Ocean - is like a warm bath all year round. The water in swimming pools and the freshwater lakes all around Perth is actually cooler and more refreshing than the sea, I've always found.

There are lots of lakes actually in Perth where you could learn to water-ski (if you haven't already.) Once you've learnt the basics, the next step is to pester Mike till he buys a ski-boat. They can be used on Waroona Dam for definite because I've skied there. You load up the car with eskies etc (insulated picnic boxes though Aussie Eskies are huge compared to the ones you can get here) and tow the boat behind.

Be careful of the beaches when it is really seriously hot, because the sand can and will burn the soles of your feet unless you are careful and that hurts. If you are fair-skinned, you might need to get Sharon to buy you some rashies. There are like tee-shirts, long or short sleeved, but they prevent UV rays from reaching and burning your skin. You can get them in surf shops, which is where you can also get the water-resistant, very high-factor sunblock lotion which is also needed in WA.

Mata rays are incredible. The glide along just barely rippling hte tips of their wings. Some of them are pretty tame and will play with you. If you just keep fairly still the rays will sometimes come and nuzzle around you for a look-see. They are as curious about you as you are about them.

I haven't swum with whale sharks though I would love to. Technically theyare fish because they lay eggs. However they are completely harmless and have the same temperament as dolphins.

Outside of the Reef at Ningaloo, the really mental can organise diving trips to go and see Great White Sharks (Jaws) close up at certain times of the year. The divers are sheltered in very, very strong cages suspended under water, then the boat crew overhead chuck huge lumps of meat, dripping with blood, into the water to attract the Great Whites. You have to have a proper PADI scuba-diving licence in order to do this, though. I get enough of a thrill watching somebody else doing it on the telly to be honest!

To swim with the rays, the whale sharks or on the coral, however, all you need is a snorkel. The coral is beautiful. Fantastic plants and millions of tiny, brightly-coloured tropical fish which look like jewels flitting around with the sun making them sparkle because the coral is only a couple of feet below the surface in places.

If you'd like to go sailing (ie with sails) that is very easily arranged too and is rear-round in WA. Ditto windsurfing (a great way to tan both sides at the sametime and you fall in often enough to stay cool!)

Plus, if you get Sharon & Mike to help to talk to the Parents of your best friends, it might well be possible to arrange for one of your friends to visit you in WA at Christmas one year, when you will be on your long summer holiday. We lived in Malysia when I was a child. My sister and I were at boarding school ithe UK She & I used to fly back & forth to Malaysia on our own 3 times a year, travelling as Unaccompanied Minors. There is no sweat to it at all. (Airlines spoil UMs - they bring titbits from First Class for you etc.)

Any friend who goes to visit you in WA will turn GREEN with envy, however, which won't be a pretty sight......:arghh::realmad:

Don't listen to any nonsense about bugs in the loos. It is all complete nonsense. There are some big spiders in WA (Huntsman spiders) but they are ompletely harmless and they eat flies, which are far more of a pain than the spiders which just mind their own business in between eating flies. What self-respecting spider would live in a loo when it can live in a peaceful and private cobweb instead?

I've been camping in WA right up from Perth to the far North of WA and back, sleeping on lilos on the ground in horrid, tiny little tents that you have to crawl in an out of. I've never seen a single creepy-crawly to worry about and camping under the stars with just a fire going nearby all night is where you will find the snakes etc if you are stupid enough to go looking for them. However, if you leave the wildlife alone, it will leave you alone too so just don't worry about it.

If you can get Mike to take you trekking & camping in WA, you can take the dogs with you, by the way and they'll love it. All those new sights, sounds and smells make it Dog Paradise and I'm not kidding!

Hang on to your new boots, by the way. One day you might go snow-skiing in the Snowy Mountains in NSW. If so, you'll need the boots for the Apres-ski in the resort.

Cheers

Gill :)

Hi Gill, Sharon here, thank you for your wise and kind words, Ffion has a spider phobia and she is a nightmare, she can see a tiny spider from miles away. I am sure she will be fine once she gets there, it's all going to be new for everyone. Mike has a job in Perth but we don't know exactly where we will be looking to live but I am sure wherever it is it will be fantastic. I love horses, I will probably be looking to get another one once we are over there, and we have 2 dogs too, Mike loves sailing and I am sure he will have a go.

Happy Christmas, but I think yours is over now due to the time difference.

Happy New Year.

Hi Girls,

As Gil said we've been here for almost a year and my daughter Alex had many of the same fears as you did. She hates bugs and spiders too and I can assure you we've never yet been bitten on the bum lol.

I know it's easy for me to say but try not to worry, having seen Alex make the move here and adapt so well (as did her younger brother), I'm sure you'll find it a piece of cake.

Of course you'll miss your friends, Alex was on msn all the time for the first few months, then less and less - she probably talks more to her Aus friends on it now than ther British ones. She keeps in touch with her very best friends via email, postcards etc., and you'll probably find that you stay friends with special people no matter how far you are away.

Alex made friends pretty easily, and she's a quiet sort of girl. She said that people are arriving all the time in school from lots of different countries and you're never the new kid for very long. She starts high school in Feb and is looking forward to that. Bullying at school is very much frowned upon (as in the UK) so don't worry about that.

It is chilly in winter and people do wear Ugg boots so bring them with you.

Hope this helps put your mind at rest

Hello Ffion

Please don't worry too much about living in Australia.I have 2 children aged 13 & 8 and like you they are a little nervous about leaving their school and friends but they are also excited too. We've been over to Perth twice now and believe me it is so lovely. Just think how cool it will be to be able to go to the beach whenever you want. The wildlife is amazing (kangaroos are very odd) and there will be so much for you to see and do. As for the spiders well I wouldn't worry too much as I don't think you see them that often and you'll be having too much fun to worry about them anyway! Hope all the replies on here have made you feel a bit better about moving and I'm sure your mum and dad are only doing it 'cause it'll be better for you and your family.

Hi

My name is Ellie. I am also moving to aus and i am 13 years old and am in yr 8. I am really excited about going to aus. Sometimes I think I will miss my friends in England but you will be able to stay in touch over Msn and e-mails, etc.

Everybody who I have spoke to on poms in oz have said how easy you can make friends and how nice everybody is. They all say they really love the schools. You will have a great time out there, even though you may miss your friends for a while you will make just as good frineds in aus.

Hope this Helps!!!
