Hello,

we found out yesterday (friday) during our daily call to Eastern Creek, Sydney that our beautiful black labrador Sydney (5 years old) was found dead in his kennel the day before. With my terrier in the same run.

We were unable to make contact with the kennels on the thursday, presumably because they were dealing with Syd. They did not make contact with us - we were home all day. We found out in our routine friday call.

Both our dogs arrived two weeks ago, and now the little one is alone for the next two weeks, and if I visit it will be more traumatic when we have to leave her again.

They are doing a postmortem on Syd, but I will never forgive myself for not being there. How many dogs do die in Quarantine, does anyone know ? I was wary of eastern Creek after the Equine Influenza disaster, but nothing can prepare you for this.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. You must be heartbroken. My cats are due to fly out on 9th January and will be staying at the same Quarantine Centre. They are 13 and am now concerned myself. My thoughts are with you.

Hi

I am so sorry to hear of your sad news and want to let you know that i know what you are going through.

Our Rottwieller (8 years) flew over in July and on the day she landed we got a call from the Quarantine station in Melbourne to say that they didnt think that she was too well.

We went to see her (even tho we had decided that during her stay we would not go and see her as it would be too upsetiing when we had to leave her again) and she was clearly not herself, quiet, disoriantated and generally not her normal happy self (although she was very pleased to see us)!!

I asked that they get a vet to see her, when the vet arrived he said that he suspected that she had a tumour. (This totally knocked us for 6 as she had always been so fit and healthy)!!

They transfered her to the vet university and carried out various tests and done ultra sounds which confirmed she had cancer. We had her put to sleep while I was holding her.

As she was supposed to be in quarantine they had to carry out a post mortem (even tho the vet said that they knew how she died). The results showed that she had cancer of the spline and abdomen and that they were covered in tumours. The main one on her spline was bulging and measured 9cm in diameter and this had burst. (I spoke with the pathologist at lenght who said that i shouldnt blame myself as even tho the tumour had burst with the stress of the flight it would have happened within the next few weeks anyway).

We were left totally devestated when this happened, as like most people who have pets they are part of the family not just "a dog/cat". It took me a long time to stop blaming myself and stop saying the "what ifs" and even tho now it is very quiet in the house without her (well as quiet as it can be with 3 small children) i do now think that at least she isnt in pain now and have started coming to terms with the fact that we didnt know and that this would have happened anyway.

The Quarantine station were absolutley fantastic all the way through. The quarantine man came with us to the vets and stayed with us. When my oh took the boys out while she (Ronnie) went to sleep the quarantine man stayed with me and along with me and the vet cried when she went to sleep.

He even called us the next day to see how we all were.

I did ask the question tho...."How many animals does this happen to when they arrive?" He told me that this only happens a couple of times a year (I presumed at each quarantine station). When they see thousands of animals each year i dont think that that is too bad....However I just think that the likes of you and me are very unlucky!!

As I have said I am so sorry that this has happend to Syd and we really feel for you. Try not to blame yourself. If you want a chat just pm me.

Take care

We really feel for you. I don't know what we'd do if anything happened to our dogs- and we do have kids!

Losing a pet is losing a member of your family, and I've lost both over the years. I can't think of anything that would lighten the terrible distress you must be in, but I'm sending a big hug anyway.

I truly doubt whether there was anything anyone could do. I don't think the kennel was fair in not contacting you the minute Syd looked poorly, but perhaps it all happened too quickly and there was just nothing you could have done. I wouldn't like to guess how your terrier is feeling, but hopefully because everything is so different anyway, she won't understand and will kinda go with the doggy flow. (Ok, I know that might sound daft, but I'm no animal psychologist, just an animal lover.)

Deb-our young german shepherd had a tumour on her spleen. We took her to the vets as she really didn't seem right and found that she (Star) had a tumour and that it had probably burst before, but to a lesser extent. This time her tummy was swollen with blood and the vet said that we had to either euthanize her or operate immediately. We chose to operate but the vet was against this as he said euthanasia was the better choice for Star. I guess again I'm saying there was nothing you could have done. It's just horrible.

My mother used to say that the only way to avoid being hurt is to never love. And what a bleak choice that would be.

Hi Alliekate

I am so very, very sorry - as well as totally shocked - to read your appalling news.

Nothing I can say will help,I know, but in a situation like this it doesn't hurt to know that other people care both about your pets and about your distress.

Hugs

Dear Alliekate,

I'm so sorry to hear about your cherished dog Sydney and I hope that your little terrier is coping okay. Please be gentle on yourself you had syds best interests bringing him with you, so you have no cause to blame yourself. There is nothing more that I can say other than echo the sentiments of everyone else who has posted. Sending you a big warm hug.

Hi AllieKate

I'm so sorry to hear about what you're going through. I know how you must feel. I have lost two of my dogs in the last year, one quite tragically. We will have to have our other put to sleep when we go and the thought breaks my heart.

You're little terrier will be just fine. He/she will have seen you lab. My vet told me they accept it easier if they know they are gone. Terriers are tough little buggers and im sure yours will be just fine.

Also dont beat yourself up. Noone knows what around the corner. Maybe the post mortem will help when you get the results.

Take care - my thoughts are with you

Nothing we can say can make it better but just remember that you have friends who care and wish that they were there to give you a big hug.

We love our dogs and it's now made us think twice about taking them or to at least get extra tests done before they go. Our 2 Weimaraner's Shadow and Bramble (5 years old) are so much part of our family and we would all be devastated (2 children as well), like you, if anything happened to them. So i can totally understand the guilt you are going through. Thank you so much for your post, we will now be seeking advice from our vet. I hope you don't have to wait too long to get your other dog back.

My husband has just got a job in Perth so will hopefully be there by March of next year.

So fingers crossed, they will be fine and you will be fine in time.

Good luck.

Sharon

I'm to so sorry for you, we left our dog behind with our daughter and we miss them both terribly. We didn't take him cause he's 10 and don't like the heat to much in UK, I really miss his cuddles and i think he's missing us too. Take care

Thank you so so very much everyone. I think it has been a terrible fluke, and I will post on here what the post mortem says. He was bouncing around for his brekkie first thing, and then just gone. Would it have been worse if the dogs had still been staying with my parents and they had to deal with it........???

What really gets me is that we cannot contact Eastern creek - by phone, email, nothing - at least until monday. You would think someone would have the heart to ring and let us know how my little one is doing - better than us I hope (thank god for the doc and his tablets. ) If we go to Sydney we can only see her tuesday or thursday - and not at all over Christmas.

I think it is quite rare for anything like this to happen - when I find out (which I will), I will let you know. We have met other people here who's dogs have travelled/quarantined no probs. Both our dogs had the best part of a grand on them for all the tests and retests, checks and rechecks, and the vet assured us they were as healthy as could be and that animals just sleep in the plane and adjust in the kennels.

The ironic thing is I only agreed to come because quarantine was "just" 30 days, and there would be no quarantine at all if we went back to the Uk.

Thank you all for your support, it means so much to be able to talk. A

So sorry to hear about your dog. It really is so hard when something like that happens. My cat died 2 weeks ago and everything I do reminds me on him. We are just waiting to hear about our visa and hoping to go in April and we were not going to take our cat with us. Well we can't now anyway.
