Guest Boosonic Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 Hi everyone, Thanks again for the warm welcomes and for offering to answer our questions. We are currently living in Bristol (South West) and are not sure yet where in oz would be best for us. So I guess our first question is where in oz? We like the hustle and bustle of a busy city but not sure we would want to live in the heart of one. We also love the great outdoors and with two children in tow we would want to be fairly close to good schools. I am a direct entry midwife (no nursing qualification), so I think that may limit our options on where in oz I can work - I think some states still require a nursing qualification as well as the midwifery degree. We would be grateful for any suggestions, thanks, Claire.
Guest Tom the Pom Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 I'm looking at Melbourne or Adelaide - nothing is set in stone, when we get there we'll know. I have tried to research everywhere I considered and have narrowed it down to these 2. I considered Perth like most Brits do but it is just too isolated and expensive (not to mention it's full of Brits) Brisbane was also considered and although a great place is going to be way too hot for me and the family to cope with (maybe when we get used to the heat we'll reconsider) Sydney and the ACT are way too busy and are what we are trying to get away from. Hope this helps a little.
kellyjamie Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Hi Guys We agree with Tom the Pom, were headed for Melbourne, Perth to isolated Brisbane to humid and Sydney so expensive, we didnt really fancy Adelaide as its a bit colonial and small for us. We chose Melbourne as its a big cosmopolitan city loads of opportunities but you can live in the suburbs and get into the CBD in 30-40 mins, it has and offers everything! goodluck x
ali Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 You'll get so many answers to this one - we chose perth because it was isolated so it will be very much peoples preference. There are some areas which are highly populated by Brits which will be true of any of the states really Ali
Quoll Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Got to put in a bid for ACT here - not nearly as busy, dirty or expensive as Melbourne or Sydney. Nowhere is far from the bush or the centre of where it is at. Houses are not bad, the coast is a couple of hours away and if you really need to get to Sydney it is 3 hours and Melbourne is 7 on pretty good roads. Not sure about the requirements for midwives but I would think that a nursing degree is probably essential for pretty much anywhere in Aus - there is a huge emphasis on qualifications and comparability of qualifications in all fields. Education - well ACT prides itself on its educational level and I suppose it is as good as anywhere else in Aus!
Life on easy street Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I moved to Melbourne because of the better job opportunity in my trade If you like the city life of London then Sydney is the best place for you If you are used to smaller city like Manchester or Bristol then Melbourne is a good choice. Perth can be a little quieter by comparison
Guest ENG 999 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 hi there:biglaugh: we moved over here(brisbane) 6mths ago from the UK. but now we are moving to MELBOURNE IN JAN 08 as we find the heat a bit too much & getting DARK early is too much for us. but what i will say is brisbane is a very nice place to bring up young kids . but my kids are 16.14 and i think MELBOURNE is the place for us. We have lived in SOUTH AUSTRALIA (GLENELG) and we have lived in WESTERN AUSTRALIA (ocean reef) and also MYREE. but as a family we think MELBOURNE will be the place for us. :notworthy:GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU WAITING FOR YOUR VISAS!!!!!:notworthy:
kellyjamie Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 That was the exact reasons we decided against Brisbane, the very hot and humid weather then the dark early nights definately swung it for us, so MELBOURNE it is!!!!! goodluck everyone:wubclub:
Guest hels269 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Hi I know you said you dont like the heat so I am not going to suggest moving to townsville however my aunty was a direct entry midwife and townsville were crying out for them. Im sure you will be fine Helen
Guest fairbloodydinkum Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 well..southern states can get a bit cold in winter..and stinking hot in summer... I was born in oz...moved from melbourne to queensland, just nth of brisbane on the sunshine coast...perfect place to be...not too hot..not too cold....we get a bit of a rain season..but thats nice too....there's work if you look for it..and a great shortage of doctors and medically trained people.. The big cities?....hussle and bussle...people elbow to elbow.... takes me 40 min to get to brisbane city.. :cute:i have the beach in front of me, and lovely mountains behind.. 20 min to the beach and fishing....20 min to the bush and mountains...
