Of course you can buy in the duty free shops in Singapore. You probably wont leave the transit area and there are loads of shops there - they arent as cheap as they used to be though! You can buy stuff duty free when you arrive in Sydney too so you may want to think about that, especially if you are looking to buy grog etc (I believe the ban on liquids doesnt apply to those bought airside but I could be wrong, I just avoid trying to take liquids on board given the hassle with the clear plastic bags). If you buy overseas then there can be warranty implications - buying in Aus means you dont have the same warranty problems if what you buy goes wrong.

OOps see you are arriving in Melbourne - I havent landed there internationally but would assume that they have the same duty free set up.

Hi Trace,

Actually, it's a little more complicated now since they changed the regulations in March of this year. Check out the Singapore Airlines and Australina Government links below:

Singapore Airlines

Duty Free

From the first site it looks as though you can buy duty free in transit in Singapore BUT they must either be:

1) purchased on board the plane

2) be delivered by duty free staff to the gate in a sealed bag

Frankly, IMHO it's a bit over the top, seeing as you're buying it in transit and not in the city but those are the rules....The second site seems to say that it's only liquids and aerosols bought in transit that you can't bring through, which makes a bit more sense.

Hope this helps!
