Guest charliebrown Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I have recently found out I have high blood pressure - doc has no idea why though, which is annoying.. Its not stupidly high, but it worries me that come meds time, this might cause problems.... any experiences with things like this?
Guest afiyafifi Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi i suffer from high bp , dont worry about it i asked my doc and she said there would be no problems and i have had it for a few years .... take care karen
Life on easy street Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 High blood pressure is partly Hereditary and partly life style. What you eat can affect your blood pressure readings Things to avoid 24 hours before a medical Coffee, Soft drinks cola, Excessive Alcohol. Food If you go onto a diet fish salads & fresh fruit for a few weeks This can reduce your blood pressure by a small amount. Exercise Will also reduce it further a 1-mile walk each day Should be enough to help. You do not need to go mad. Stress Some people try and do just too much in their lives So working 60 hours a week will up you blood pressure. There are books available at health food store,s about blood presure and diet.
NTH SHARMAN Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi Charliebrown. If you think its a "white coat syndrome" situation, I would suggest buying yourself a BP tester for home. We got one for £10 from Lloyds Chemist. I found that testing my BP every day, I grew accustomed to the "cuff" and my slightly high BP settled down nicely in time for our medicals. It was the one thing I was really worried about, but it turned out absolutely fine. Definitely £10 worth spending!! Best of luck. Tracey :wubclub:
Guest mandy&Jem Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 My medical doctor said he was satisfied with my my blood pressure and bmi even though they were both high, but the case officer wanted me to go and see a cardiologist! the med doctor recommended i go see a general physician instead! I too purchased boots blood pressure monitor and my blood pressure was okay! When it came to the medical my blood pressure went up to 145 over 115!!! What !! its never been over 95!!!! I was so nervous, so I mentioned my BP had been okay all week but she poo pooed the monitor saying it would not give as acurate a reading as the one she used! She took another two readings and finally put the lowest in the report wich was 144 over 95 !! I was in tears when i left! Anyway i will let you know how i get on! should know soon whether they have accepted me or not! I know people who have high blood pressure and have had no problems getting through the medical. They wanted me to have extra tests because of being overweight as well! So if you only have high blood pressure i dont believe you have anything to worry about! Good luck! x
Guest wardy Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 My hubby had no idea he had high bp til the meds. Unfortunately according to panel doc it was dangerously high and said he had to go and get extra readings from our gp. When the gp saw him he was sent for emergency heart scan (next day) this fortunately was clear as was all blood checks for cholestral etc. He was put on meds 5mg at first didn't touch his bp, increased to 10mg and not much help eventually and now he is on 20mg and has done the trick. We were warned all these extra tests could cost us £100's but no charge at all. Our meds were finally cleared by Sydney on 5th December hubbies was referred the rest of the families were cleared early November. For us the meds were worth every penny to be eventually told of this potential problem our gp told him his heart could have given out at any time. This same doc was the man who tested him 6 years earlier and thought his high bp was down to white coat syndrome and ignored it and never bothered to tell him :swoon: Beggars belief but alls well that ends well though its given us a wake up call. Dont worry to much about yours it shouldn't prove a problem but make sure you get checked properly and dont let doc fob you off. Lecture over. :wideeyed: Best wishes
Guest cazbeckham Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Hi all I suffer with White Coat Syndrome too and was worried when I went for my meds. I and OH are on BP tablets. We also use a home BP machine and take readings and record them daily. About a week or so before meds I went to GP and paid to have a 24 monitor put on for BP readings, then took a print out with me to the meds but BP was fine on the day but she still attached the readings to the paperwork. Had to get a letter from OH GP which was asked for at the meds as he is on medication and she needed a letter to back up why he was on BP tablets. Said we would only be asked for it once paperwork arrived in Sydney so best attach everything before sending off. She had to tick box B on the med form because we were on medication otherwise it would have been box A. Also said our meds were fine as were our xrays and blood tests but it still wasnt her decision. Meds should have arrived in Sydney by tomorrow latest so now the long wait. I would advise anyone going for meds to take as much information with you as possible, saves being asked for it later. I also took a letter from my Consultant regarding my knee keyhole surgeries, knee replacement and ankle surgery and panel doc was well impressed that I got that information. Good luck Caz
ali Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 My friend had high BP - the medical Dr took 3 readings but it was still high, she had to have further investigations which obviously caused a delay (but her health was more important), but it all turned out OK and she has since been granted her visa. Ali
Guest mandy&Jem Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 I agree with you entirely kaye and Ali, Our health is the most important issue here. I am aware that my BP is high and have been monitered by my doctors for a while, Fortunatley I dont need medication and i am on a complete life change, diet, exercise cut down on drinking ect. All my bloods are normal, cholestrol and sugars ect! Obviously my problem is more serious as a i am overweight which is a contributing factor to my high BP and could cause other health issues.........which, i presume, is what they are rightfully so, concerned about........Hence the diet............just got a long way to go. I do agree though that is is easy to get wrapped up in the desperation to emigrate and forget about what is more important. Believe me ive had the smack in the face i need to keep me motivated! Good luck everyone and Stay Healthy!!!!
ali Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Good luck with the medical Mandy - even if it gets referred it doesn't mean No - as I said in previous post my friend got her visa and should be arriving in Perth next year Ali
Guest kevin.n.christine Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Hi guys. I have Hypertension which is a natural tightening of the artery muscles. My blood pressure at the point when this was discovered was 180 over 140! I had no idea I had it and there were no syptoms of it. At that point I was playing football about 3-4 times a week. I went to the hospital and basially had a full MOT. Heart ultrasound, kindney ultrasound, about 100 blood tests, CGI and a chest Xray. All of these ruled out any problems that might have been causing the high blood pressure and also confirmed it was hypertension. This was all aout a year ago and I have been on medication since to keep it down. When we went for our meds I took along my prescription and explained the circumstances. My blood pressure was high when the reading was taken for the meds We thought that specialist information would have been needed from the hospital for the medicals once the LCU had a look at them, but, nope, we got our visas without any problems. My condition is quite a big one and I will be on 4 pills a day probably for the rest of my life and at 29 I am likely to cost the Australians a wee bit of money. Try not to worry about the medicals too much, just go do them and if they need any more information they will ask for it. Worrying about it is not going to change the medical outcomes for the better. Take care and good luck. Kevin.
Guest Rachel&Stu Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Hi guys:wubclub: Have also been treated with diuretics for hypertension. Had normal bloods, xray etc. Am not overweight, don't smoke, go to gym 4x week etc etc. This was 3 yrs ago.. Three things finally brought by BP to upper end of normal and I came off the meds: 1. went part-time at work. This was the most important factor in my view. 2. cut out caffeine and added salt. I am very sensitive to caffeine. 3. took up yoga. The deep breathing has been proved to relax the arteries. I did research on ways that I could help myself as I did not want to be on medication for high BP at age 36 and whilst not a disease in itself, it is a risk factor for Coronary Heart Disease and Type II Diabetes. Hope it helps. Rachel x
Guest Colin R Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 G'day I had high blood pressure when I got to the Medicals great!!! Hardly surprising really with house sold and no visa and a business we had committed too in Tasmanai. Anyones BP would be high I think. Anyway to cut a long story short I ate fish and veggies no alcohol no coffee . I had to be checked but the specialist said it was white coat syndrome. But in the end there was no trouble and we are now over in Tasmania and loving it . Good Luck
Guest mandy&Jem Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Hi everyone, recieved the following e.mail this morning from immi.gov........................ Dear Ms Keight, Thank you for your email response. I note that your medicals have been received but as yet, the Health Assessment Service who are required to finalise the health assessments has not made its decision yet. When the medical outcomes have been finalised and hopefully, cleared, we will have the potential to grant your visa application and advise you of the outcome. You should not travel to Australia until you have received notification of the grant of your student visa. If you decide to arrive in Australia before the grant of your visa you will need to lodge and pay for a new student visa application onshore. Yours sincerely................... O.M.G. Want to e.mail them back, and ask how long i have to wait before they notify me either way!...........Eeeek! The nerves are really rattling now! BP 180 over 10000000000 and rising. lol.
Guest charliebrown Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 rather than reply individually - I'd just like to thank everyone for their advice so, I've taken heed - its a low fat/salt no coffee or alcohol diet followed by some gentle (daily if possible) exercise from now on, even through Christmas. Probably be a good incentive not to add an inch to my waist anyway I'm just glad that if I somehow cant lower my BP much in time, that it probably wont have a bearing on my visa

Guest barney1450 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Hi I was diagnosed last year with hypertension after 2 years of high blood pressure at the age of 38, and yes had all the kidney tests etc, and these came back fine. Have been on blood pressure tablets for a year and after reviews now taking three lots to keep it stable. I got my visa and the blood pressure issue did not affect it at all. Hoping my move to aus on the 30th Jan 2010 helps the bp come down, less work, less stress and a new life. Only thing at mo is the stress of making the plans to move and dealing with upset family members, who all want my attention every spare minute i have. I darent test what my bp is at moment, cus i would get admitted. lol Good luck evryone Tonia xxx
