Guest chellemounfield@aol.com Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Anyone emmigrated to Adelaide?? Any advice etc? Thanks Paul, Chelle, Josh (7) George(2):err:
Guest Guest9973 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi Chelle. Adelaide is a lovely place ,especially if you have kids,it's a great environment for them.We have lived here over 7 years now. I'd do a lot of research on the suburbs and at least narrow down to a few suburbs. It will depend on where you are working as well. Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au is a handy place to start. Adelaide is a place that does grow on you and sometimes it's charms are not apparent immediately.

Chelle:smile: Hi Chelle No probs, hopefully a few more can add their views of Adelaide as well. It is around 9.00am but it is cloudy/windy and around 70c - which is not too bad as long as we can walk our doggies on the beach later. Good luck on the visa application, the waiting is orrible' but it's part of the journey here. Good / skilled tradesmen are in demand here - the more skilled the better. At a Christmas "do" last night I was talking to a mate who works in the construction industry and he says there is a chronic shortage of very skilled/experienced tradesmen. So hopefully if Paul is good he will find work relatively easy.Wages are not brilliant but promotion can come easy if you are good at your job.If Paul is self employed it might be worth working for someone here for a while to get the "lie of the land" perhaps. Make sure Paul gets all his qualifications recognized and is able to get a full Class A license here. I'm much more familiar with the southern suburbs - I live 35 mins south of the city in Onkaparinga Hills. It back onto rural land but easy reach of the city - so best of both worlds Areas that are popular and decent in the south are (sorry if I miss any) : Hallett Cove,Woodcroft,Aberfoyle Park,Happy Valley,Sheidow Park,Chandlers Hill,Onkaparinga Hills (Yay!),Seaford,Moana,Port Noarlunga. Further south is Aldinga which is having a lot of new building going on. Most areas down here are pretty good but all can have a bad street or a bunch of Ferals spoiling things. Seeing it yourself is the only way. Enter those suburbs into a search in Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au to give you an idea. There are a lot of good schools down here but they are starting to get full. There is a lovely and very well funded primary school near to us called Pimpala Primary. My friend works there so I get the "inside info",I've sent a lot of people there recently. Hey - I've rambled and I have a hangover!! Hope this helps BTW there is a south Australian sub forum if you want to post questions in there . Poms In Oz - South Australia It might be easier for me to keep up with your questions in there as I loose stuff in this main forum:biglaugh:
Lazy Cow Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 We love it here too! Our kids are older than yours but they've never wanted to go back. My Oh is a sparkie and has never had a problem finding work -although he has been working as an engineer for the last couple of years. The big money -and the most work- is out at the mines, although whenever he's wanted to employ a sparkie, he's found it pretty hard, so I guess there's enough work out there round Adelaide. As for a good school; I'd do as Tyke recommends and wait and see for yourself. One man's meat etc. People feel strongly about their own area / school etc and you're better coming to your own conclusions. I guess your brother will be able to give you a more qualified opinion after a bit. For us, it IS 9am (well, 9.18!) OH and son have left for the toy run, but it's far from 90F...it's just started raining and it's COLD!!!! (20C, and believe me, that is cold...you have no idea till you live with the different temps how cold the 20's can be here.) But it's brilliant here! We love it!* :wubclub: LC * Not everybody does though... Have you been on Adelaide Brits? Or PiA? Both are good sites although AB (IMHO) has more people that have been here over a year! No offence to PiA as there are a few very nice people who post on there, and it's a younger, better presented site.
Lazy Cow Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Darn you and your quick fingers Tyke! (He's very wise you know Chelle....I understand it's come with age...) LC

(He's very wise you know Chelle....I understand it's come with age...) LC My fingers ain't that quick this morning ..............something to do with consuming large amounts of alchofrol last night:biglaugh: Hey ......wise......me??? That's a first - I just live here. PS Chelle..................we have a bit of good natured banter in here - don't let it put you off and feel free to insult Lazy Moo at any time.....everyone else does:cute:

Is the full class A license achieveable at night school??? We are aware Paul will have to gain an oz qualification. He is self employed here but a sub contractor. We understand he will have to work supervised until he gains the qualification. I heard once over to go south rather than north. Is this correct? I really appreciate all your information. Are the above web addresses as I cant open links??? Thanks tyke Chelle:notworthy:

Guest kdal Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 LOL Kdal!!!!! Hope you have got over the hangover now!!!!! Yes any information would be great. When did your brother in law join? Are you in Adelaide too? Chelle:) ......... Hi Chelle, Sorry about that but I had to go back to bed as went to the Essex Meet today so a couple of more hours in the pit helped!! Arr you have probably now guessed that I am still here and not there LOL My Brother-In-Law joined the Adelaide Police over 2 years ago and is due to leave soon. The put alot of our police onto Transport police when they were highly trained in other areas and alot of them were not that happy. But I suppose some were happy not to have so much responsibility. He is now leaving and they are opening an indoor play centre this month (actually think it could be open already). But they do love Australia even though he was disappointed with the Police out there and hence the reason to stay but try something different. They originally wanted to go to Brisbane but his post was Adelaide and now they have fallen in love with the place and decided to stay in Adelaide. Normally a group of police from here go together so your brother-in-law wont feel like the new person! It is good as he will also already have his circle of friends and that helps too. Not sure if I can help you with anything else but by all means just ask or send me a PM and I will try and help out if I can. Good luck with everything :wubclub:
Guest KP Nuts Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 LOL Kdal!!!!! Hope you have got over the hangover now!!!!! Yes any information would be great. When did your brother in law join? Are you in Adelaide too? Chelle:) Well Chelle, i just got back from the halfway house meet an she was happily topping it up, so i would'nt think your going to get anything sensible out of her for a while................ well, actually it'll be pretty soon once she's read this........ an well, she looked fine, she was'nt topping herself up really she was being very responsible an we all had a great natter. But please becareful with LC she is a great woman with a fountain of knowledge that she parts with very sparingly of recent, she has a job now which takes up her PIO time, which is a sad loss to us Adelaide heading pom's, but we still got Tyke an a couple of others. Lazy Cow Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Yeah KP, you wanna be careful of me!!!!:mask: Chelle, all I know is ... that I know nothing... Hi Chelle, one of the great things about Adelaide is the high level of voluntary work and focus on charity. At Christmas some of the stores have trees outside where you select a child's gift tag then buy a present to put back under the tree. We also have charities such as the Salvos and Vinnies asking for gifts and food for families, the homeless, kids in care etc. The Toy Run is simply a great day out organised by the Motorcycle Riders Association of SA, between Glenelg and Hahndorf, where entry is by gift or gold coin donation! People make the effort to come out, watch and wave as the tinselled-up bikes go past. Yesterday raised $250k in toys and donations for Vinnies which is awesome! We've only been here a bit over two years, but we've lived life to the full! It has been hot, but last week went from the 20s to 37C on Thursday, then back down again. It's been pretty nippy at night, but that works just fine 'cos it's easier to get to sleep. (Not that I ever have a problem with that!) I have no idea what the fahrenheit equivalent is! As for Paul's class A...my Paul did his class A at TAFE one evening a week. Good to have 'cos you can sign off work, and of course you learn all about SA electrics, but you can work without it -so I'm told! I'm pretty much winging it here as OH's gone to work so I can't beat the info out of him! Listen to Tyke. He's old but useful (tee hee!) and seems very kind. (Well, he likes dogs so can't be all bad...) LC

Danny&Em Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 hi all,, would just like to say THANKS for all the info above,, keep it comin folks!!! Cheers...
Lazy Cow Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hi LC, Thanks to you too. Wish we were there!!!! Whats the toy run???? Ah I have a friend in Adelaide and last week she said it was 90 odd and I tild my friends. tail between legs now and tell them cold!!! Mind you not as cold as here!!!! 7 degrees now. Bitter cold and had sleet today!!! Yes you right, have to find out once in adelaide re schools etc. How long you been in Adelaide? Not been on the sites you have givven but I will. Thanks Chelle Hi Chelle! I've only just noticed your post so sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I don't really come on here (or any forum) much...leaving it for the new people I guess. Or cos I'm lazy! We are in our fourth year now and time has gone so quickly. The Uk feels so far behind us; almost like a dream-life. If that doesn't make sense perhaps I'm forgetful and lazy! The Toy Run is an annual event (and you have them in the UK too!) where bikies get together and have a run up to Hahndorf, taking presents which will be given to disadvantaged kids. It looks fab and people sit out and watch the bikes go past....it's a real 'feel-good' event and many people decorate their bike - and themselves! It's one of the few times people look at bikies as people and not thugs waiting to sell drugs or bash people! There's a lot of charity work in SA, a lot of volunteering, and if ever anyone wanted to feel part of the community, I would recommend helping out! You get to meet heaps of genuine people plus you might be able to use someone there for a reference. Oh and it's great fun! When your friend told you it was 90F, it probably was! The weather can be quite changeable at times ...or it can just get stuck in the high 30/40C (I only know in centigrade, sorry . Also it depends where you live in Adelaide -I'm not including the rest of SA- obv. if you are down at the beach the temperature falls by a fair bit, as it does up in the hills. Which is good when it's hot, but not if it's winter and freezing cold! Hope the other sites helped. :wubclub: LC
Tallyho! Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hi Can't really answer your questions because I'm not there yet  Hopefully we should be on our way this year (fingers crossed). The Adelaide Bound website also has loads of useful info etc :- http://www.adelaidebound.com/ Wish you all the best with everything. Kim x
