tracybayliss Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 hi everyone hope you can help, I have been offered a job as a midwife in south brisbane, however as part of the sponsorship they have informed me that I need to arrange private health insurance, which is fine, they can provide this themselves they have quoted me $3,784 per year for a family (our family consists of 4) is this expensive, they have said I can find my own insurance, therefore can anyone reccommend a company. thanks tracy
Lazy Cow Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 We use Mutual Community. They are pretty popular and we've claimed back for dental and optical bills with no trouble. We only have Extras cover - dental and yes, you've guessed it!, optical. Unless we make it to the 100k couples threashold (which is when we'd pay a Medicare levy) I don't think we'd even consider hospital cover. That said, we were on permanent visa and I don't know anything about what other visa holders can claim from Medicare. Mutual Community have a website:Compare Health Insurance Plans - Mutual Community Health Insurance and the Medicare one is:https://www.hic.gov.au/about/index.shtml Don't know if either will help, but I guess it's a start! Oh and we pay around $60 per month for extras for a family of four. LC

With HBA - we had to go thru them when we came over on 457 visa and we just stuck with them

You can put in your needs and they will find the most suitable ones for you and let you know the range of costs so you can choose what you can afford Private Health Insurance Australia - iSelect Hope this helps Liam
Guest Gollywobbler Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi Tracey I'm with Lazy Cow on this one. Under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement between the UK ad Australia, you are etitled to Medicare for all "necesssary medical treatment" whilst in Oz. To LC's comments I would add only that ambulance cover is a must because emergency ambulances are not free in Australia and I've heard mention of $500 for a ride to hospital. I have an official factsheet about the RHCA that I unearthed on the Web recently. The file size is too big for me to be able to attach it to this reply. However, you can e-mail me via PiO so that I will then have your e-mail address and can send you a copy of the document if you wish. It is a good, clear description of the Agreement, I reckon. Cheers Gill

Cheers Gill Yes ambulance cover is an absolute must. You can get cover from about $60 a year for the family - can't remember which company this is though! You could be looking at about $5000 for an ambulance call out according to some television commercials! Felicity:cute:

We pay $109 pa for the four of us. you can pick up forms from the post office, although if you do pay for full medical cover, ambulance cover is generally included. LC
