Guest monty Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 We are going to drive from Adelaide to Melbourne along the Great Ocean Rd on the way to collect our 3 cavaliers from quarantine!!!! We will make the return journey a more direct route. I've asked about this briefly before and I remember somebody mentioned Fairy somewhere?? For all those who have travelled on this breathtaking journey have you got any must sees and also good places to stay a night or two on the way. We plan to leave on monday 10th or Tuesday 11th and we collect the dogs on the morning of 13th December. Any advice would really be appreciated Montyx
Life on easy street Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 That is a great idea I took a day trip one-day tour from melbourne The twelve apostles, You will need at least a couple of hours If funds allow you can take helicopter rides Port Campbell National Park, Apollo bay. Places to stay Port Campbell Apollo bay. Do not try and do it in one day if funds allow arrange a stop over part way on route.
Alan Collett Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Port Fairy is the place (close to Warrnambool). Also Apollo Bay/Lorne (though Lorne is pricey in the summer). ENJOY!
Guest Susie_x_Chris Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 I would also recommend the helicopter trip at the Twelve Apostles. I have done it twice now and it is well worth the money for this most stunning of places. You cannot truly appreciate the layers and colours in the cliffs until you get out above the water, and you get the chance to get away from the hoards of tourists that are shuffled alond the viewing platforms by their tour guides - quickly, quickly, back on the bus!. The tourists are not too bad off season though. As you are driving along the road you will see signs for helicopter rides - can't miss them. Take your time and take it all in. If you get a chance, it is worth taking a trip up to the Grampian Mountains. It is about 1.5 hours drive from the Great Ocean Road (Adelaide side). Each time I have been to Oz, I go back here. People think I am mad going to the same place the whole time, but 3-4 days emersed in the beauty of this mountain range to me is perfection. There are walks to suit all abilities. I stay in a B&B just outside Halls Gap in a hamlet called Pomonal. The B&B is called Welch's on Wildflower ("GRAMPIANS BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMMODATION, WELCH'S ON WILDFLOWER, POMONAL, INN.HOUSE B&B"). The food is amazing and the walks from the house are great. Pauline and Graeme are the best hosts and for the cost of dinner you can stay in and delight at Pauline's culinary creations. Sorry to go on, but I just love the place. It is so easy to combine the Grampians with the Great Ocean Road and I would seriously recommend anyone to do it all. It was this place that first put a love of Oz in me so it will always have a special place in my heart. Susie
Guest monty Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Thankyou, life on easy street, Alan and Susie for replying to my post, Susie your passion for Grampian mountains really emanates through your post!! A definate to do then !!! Montyx
Guest Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 we stayed in a beautiful B&B in Port Fairy called Gobbels (think that was how it's spelt). Pronounced Go Bells anyway, well worth checking it out. I can't wait to do the Great ocean road again, it's beautiful.
Guest chloew Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 If you get the chance stop at Tower Hill for a walk. It's near Warrnambool. We were rewarded with Koalas - with baby, kangaroos, emus, echnidas and wallabies. Parks Victoria: Tower Hill State Game Reserve page
Guest chloew Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Also, ROBE is quite a good stopping point between Adelaide and Melbourne. A quaint little place which helps break up the driving. Robe Visitor Information
