Hi there guys. Just joined the forum and hoping to get some good advice and encouragement!

My partner Cat and I are hoping to escape grey, rainy Glasgow (and the UK in general). We've been looking around various places to move to (thought about Canada, but still to damp). So, we're planning a three week trip to Australia next year to have a look around with the intention of moving permanently if its to our taste.

We both run a small media company based just outside of Glasgow which we would like to re-locate with us. Also, I'm currently re-training as a clinical hypnotherapist and my partner Cat is about to undertake teacher training in Art and IT. I'm 41 and she's 35.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a) the best places to locate to that would provide us with access to a city, but I'd also prefer a semi-rural setting to live in. And b) given our occupations and respective ages can anyone advise on the complexity of the application process and how swift (or not), it is likely to be?

Many, many thanks in advance.

Alan

Hi Alan

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

I have started a duplicate of your thread in the Migration Issues section because I think your visa-options are probably pretty complicated.

Alan Collett is Go Matilda is really the unoffical "Resident Agent" on Poms in Oz. He helps huge numbers of our Members to get started. I have created this second thread because I want to make sure that Alan has a chance to read your post. Whereas I haven't a clue what your visa options might be, he could tell you exactly.

I don't even know which member of the GM team you should have a chat with, unfortunately. They will chat to you on the phone for free for 15 or 20 minutes, and the most useful thing about that is that they can tell you straight away which visas you definitely wouldn't be eligible for, which does narrow the whole thing down and makes the maze far more manageable, I reckon.

Whilst we wait for Alan to help get you started, have a look here, I suggest:

Visas & Immigration

Look towards the bottom of the screen and click on applications and forms. Download Information Booklets 5 & 6 and start working your way through them, I suggest.

Best wishes

Brilliant, thanks so much for that, much appreciated. We've been looking on the net and thinking really hard about Oz and if it meets our expectations when we visit next year (which I'm certain it will) then we're off!

Can't wait!

you say you are 41 my advice is get a move on because if you go for a scouting trip next year and apply for your visa next year you will 43 probaly when you get your visa if you have no setbacks and the age limit is 45 a bit close for comfort unless your wife is the main applicant

good luck with your scouting

by the way which planet are you from(zzorg) lol

Hi Alan

I've altered the title of this thread so that it will be sure to catch Alan Collett's eye.

Wanting to emigrate to Oz and finding a visa that fits the bill can be two very different things. Hypnotherapy is not on the list of occupations, let alone on the MODL. Also, at this stage you and your wife are only in the training stages with your respective new skills.

I don't want to suggest anything at all because I don't want to set hares running which might turn out to be rubbish and completely the wrong idea for you.

I think it is far better just to wait for Alan Collett to comment.

Cheers

Hello Alan.

First base is to identify a visa strategy. As business owners it may be that one of the business skills visas is the way to go - eg the State/Territory Sponsored Business Owner (Provisional) visa (subclass number 163) leading into the permanent residency visa (subclass number 892) after you have been running a business for a couple of years in Australia and satisfy the threshold criteria for the 892 visa.

For background:

Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Business Skilled Migration

Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Business Skilled Migration

State/Territory Sponsored Business Owner (Provisional) (Subclass 163)

State/Territory Sponsored Business Owner (Residence) (Subclass 892)

At your age (under 45) you could look at the non-State Sponsored business visas too, but these have higher thresholds to be satisfied (both initially and when the time comes to seek permanent residency), so on a risk averse basis I usually encourage applicants to look at the State and Territory Sponsored pathways, even if they do require one to approach a State or Territory Government and to commit to that State/Territory for a period of time.

There could be other visa pathways too, but these don't jump out at me from the content of your email. I would have a freebie chat with my colleague John Sylvester who is well versed in business skills visas, as well as skilled migration and employer sponsored migration. You can reach John on Southampton number 023 80 488777, or send me an email or Private Message with your telephone number (landline and mobile) and I can ask him to call you.

Hope this helps for starters.

Brilliant, many thanks for the info. I should also have added that my partner and I have four Masters degrees between us, two of which are postgrads in I.T. Not sure if that makes the situation any easier or more complicated.
