Guest Sharon & Mike Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Hi Tom My names Mike and I'm a football coach, I'm going over to live in Perth and I've already contacted a few clubs about coaching for them. Yes they play football in Australia but they call it soccer so you have to make sure you don't call it footy or football. If you click on the link that I've added to this post, it's all of the clubs in the Brisbane area, you'll find loads of contact numbers and email address and I'm sure they will be more than happy to keep in touch with you before you finally move out. So if you get some help from your Mum or Dad and take a look at the clubs I'm sure you'll feel much happier about playing soccer in Aus. http://www.bndsoccer.com.au/clubs/club_locations_and_information By the way Spurs are not very good and I'm sure you should support Man Utd but I've got Robbie Keane in my fantasy team so don't tell anyone. Good luck with finding a club and let me know how you get on All the best Mike, Sharon, all the kids and dogs
Guest Gollywobbler Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Hi Tom, Hi Mike Mike - thank you so much for helping Tom. The link you have provided is brilliant. Tom - my nephew Peter is a bit older than you and he lives in Perth, but like you he is a very keen soccer player. According to Peter's Mum (my sister Elaine) soccer is the fastest-growing sport in Australia. There are teams for absolutely ALL ages from what I have read on the Web. You will find a team to join, for sure. I think Mike is right, too. Get your Mum & Dad to help and get in touch with some clubs now so that they will be expecting you when you arrive. If you ask your Mum & Dad, I'll bet that they can arrange a soccer pen-pal for you via one of the clubs, too. This way, you'll be able to talk soccer with others before you get to Brisbane and make some friends in the Clubs. Tahe49 (Rache, is it?) - dear Mike has plans for coaching adults in Perth. I've got plans to twist his arm up behind his back and to make him promise to coach at least one kids' team as well because soccer is growing so fast in Oz that the kids' teams are burgeoning and are in dire need of coaches, so Elaine tells me, but Mike doesn't know about that bit yet, so SHHHHHHH!!!! Cheers Gill
Guest Sharon & Mike Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 No problem Gill. By the way I think you've let the cat out of the bag
Guest kdal Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 i have got some cousons and my uncle that live in oz he has got a jet ski so i hope to go on there soon. .... I went on a jet ski once in Cyprus and it was fantastic, you will love it especially in the lovely Australian sea. Hope you enjoy Australia
ali Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Hi Tom, I have a son called Tom who is 8 and we live in Perth. My Tom loves football, you'll find they call it soccer here. Tom does soccer skills training on Saturdays with Grasshoppers and in May he plays matches for melville City. He's a man utd supporter. You may find too that you get to like other sports, Tom is doing basketball camp during the holidays and also he wants to play aussie rules next year - you'll have loads to do. Good luck with your move

Guest Sharon & Mike Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Hi If you take a look at the link attached you should find some info which will point you in the right direction. http://www.footballnsw.com.au/youplay/ Just a few pointers when you go to a new club Make sure that the coaching is structured and the kids look like they are enjoying the session. Qualifications don't always make a good coach but you should make sure that the people looking after your kids know what they are doing and have been checked out (Level 1 or 2 coaching badge, CRB checked, first aid etc) if they are English coaches they should have this. When I have a new player I always make a point of talking to them before they join in a session as it shows I'm interested in them not just how good they are and they tend to feel more at home. Ask yourself the same question when you pick a club and go to a session for the first time. Soccer is fun and a good way for the kids to learn values that they can take forward into their adult life. So does the coach present the values you want your kids to learn? Team work, patients, good communication, respecting others, encouragement, etc you know what I mean. Wow did I go on....sorry about that. You should have seen my coaching portfolios Anyway good luck and let me know if you need any help. Mike

Guest tahe49 Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Thanks everyone - this is Tom's mum (Not 'Rach' Gill - 'Opal'). That is a great idea about contacting a club. will definately do it, the problem we have is that we don't EXACTLY know where we want to live. We have a rough idea though. Great pointers Mike, will make sure I remember them.
Guest Sharon & Mike Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Your more than welcome and good luck.

The main thing at this stage, I reckon, is to to put him in touch with a club out in Oz. Even if the lads can't be persuaded to get involved with the idea of becoming a soccer pen-pal to a child in the UK, I'm sure one of the coaches would agree to help out. In some ways it might be better for your son to correspond with a coach because the coach will understand - and will not feel personally let down - if you then settle o the other side of, say, Brisbane and your son does not join the coach's own club. Also, a coach would take the trouble to read your son's specific questions and to answer them thoughtfully and specifically, I would imagine. Cheers Gill
ali Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Hi Tom, This is confusing isn't it - Tom hasn't played a lot of golf, but he has a golf bag and a few clubs and his dad takes him to the oval to hit some balls. He's asked for a tennis raquet, cricket bat and a basket ball net for christmas, so it sounds as if you're both very similar and like lots of different sports. Tom does sometimes miss his friends in England because he had known them a long time but he keeps in touchh with them by email. Be warned though that girls are better at keeping in touch than boys and Tom gets more emails and letters from the girls in his old class. When we first moved, Tom used to send his teacher emails telling her and the class about his life here in Australia - this was a great way to keep in touch with people and everyone was really impressed when he started to learn Japanese. He's also made lots of new friends here in Australia and did so very quickly after starting school, in fact he's probably got the most friends out of our whole family and did it so much more quickly than everyone else. He's been to loads of birthday parties. The boys he plays soccer with were really friendly even though he didn't know anyone when he started, they're all now really good friends. Tom loves playing outside and because the weather here is nice most of the time, it means he can do that alot, he often plays with his mates at aussie rules outside the house. Tom and his sister Alex told me that here in Australia there are new children starting school all the time and you're never the new kid for long, so don't worry about being new when you start your new school. I know you're not coming to the same part of Australia, but if you'd like to email Tom, get your mum to send me a message and I can send you his email address. Ali
Guest Gazzer Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi Tom, Football is known as 'Soccer' in Australia and it is very popular, especially since Australia played in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. My 2 boys are aged 9 and 5 and they have just joined Palm Beach soccer club. They played for Kempston Colts when we lived in England. They miss their team very much. We also miss the English football very much and you can only get to see it if you have the Australian version of 'Sky' television. David Beckham played in Sydney last week and the whole country was in 'Beckham Fever'. It is a shame you and your dad support Spurs! We think you would be better off supporting Ipswich Town! There is a place in Brisbane called Ipswich so at least you will be in good hands! We are sure you will find enough people to play 'Soccer' with here in Australia. Good Luck!
Guest dannyboy Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Tom, Good to see that your Dad has a good taste in football teams... Dan
