Guest Julie495 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 HI can anyone please answer this question... my friend who lives in Perth has told me it is easier to apply for residency rather than emigrating.... Is there a difference? The first of my many silly questions..... Julie

Guest Julie495 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 lol... I've thought of an easier way.... I need to join an OZ dating agency and get married ASAP...........
ali Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Does your friend mean applying for residency once your in Aus on a temp visa? I'm sure the people on temp visa's would rather have come on a PR right away, and on a temp visa you only get emergency treatment for example and can't apply for medicare. Ali
Guest Gollywobbler Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Hi Julie I think your friend is probably suggesting that you should go to Oz using a 90 day ETA and then make an onshore application for the onshore version of whichever visa you are planning to apply for. This is by no means unheard of but it does involve actively misleading DIAC both in the ETA application and on the disembarkation card on the plane, and again at the airport if your intentions are questioned. You would go on to a Bridging Visa A whilst your main visa application is being processed, and you might even be able to work in Oz whilst you wait (though you have to make a special and additional application to DIAC for permission to work.) Also, if you are in Australia when the main application is made, you would not have to leave Oz in order for the visa to be granted. You would be entitled to Medicare if you are British, pursuant to the reciprocal health care agreeement between the UK and Australia, but Medicare will only pay for "necessary medical treatment" and they won't do anything which is purely elective for free. Cheers Gill
