  3. Hi All, We're in Oz perm (moved in Sept) but our 18 year old daughter returned to the UK as she was pregnant to her UK boyfriend (....found out on the way over here in Singapore.....total nightmare !). Well baby's now 3 months old now and she's picking her life up and has been accepted to statrt college next week. Problem is its 2 bus journeys with the baby ! Is anyone selling their car ..for a song...like we ended up doing ? If you are this is a needy cause and we could really do with the help. Many thanks Caroline (PS sorry if this sounds like a begging letter or a sob story...)
  4. Have just read this article Darwin property more expensive than New York and London | News.com.au and thought it interesting, i dont really want to start another 'is there going to be a housing bubble burst' thread. You would really have to be troppo to want to pay more than half a million to live in an average place in Darwin! but it does say alot about the housing markets in Australia. Bob

    Anyone from York Need advice

Hi there, We are moving back to the UK roughly November time we need to stay till the dog clear quarntine here. I have a job offer practically in Harrogate when I want it, But its soooo expensive. We are now looking at York as the commute by train is only 30 minutes from the town centre, Does anyone know which is the best area to live in in terms of train stations schools etc. Me and my husband are average joes earners nothing flash so we won't be living in the heart of town in some posh apartment or anything but just some general ideal's on the better area's town to live in etc my son is 10 so we need a primary school for a few months then off to secondary school so something close by or bike ride would be good. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks Sarah

    IELTS test at York

Hello all I have just returned form my IELTS test at Melton College York and thought I would share my experience and thoughts with all you lovely POI members. I had to take the IELTS as I have hit 40 this year and need the points to get my 175 visa. I arrived this morning at 8-30 nice and early to get one of the "limited" parking spaces. Spaces were not too limited though and you could get quite a few cars in there so don't worry too much about that. Registration took place from 09-00 with people queueing at two tables for the different types of test. As I was doing the general test I went to that table. Most people were doing the academic test to allow them to work or study here in the UK. There were approx 10 people doing the general test to get to OZ and as such we tended to group together amongst the many other nationalities present. I met a great group of people who all new about or used POI, so hello to all of you! The tests themselves were done under very strict exam conditions with a shouty man telling people to shut up and sit down. Many of us commented that it was like being back at school! The listening test came first. This seemed quite easy, but required a good deal of concentration. If your mind wanders you have had it, so concentrate! The reading text was next. There was no break between the tests so no time to relax or talk amongst ourselves. The reading was the test I found hardest. Not because I can't read, but because the questions are designed to be misleading. Several are in the "true, false & not given" variety. I still am unsure if the whales who go to eastern Australia arrive before or after the ones that go to western Australia, but I think that was a not given answer. I now know quite a bit about whales! The writing task was next. Once again there was no break in proceedings so off we went. We had to write a letter of 150 words which if you are still reading this, you will know I didn't have too much trouble with. Next we had a 250 word essay to do. Once again no real problem. We had to leave the exam hall then and move to another site. Our speaking exams were done in the afternoon from 2-00 onwards. We all sat in a canteen and waited to be called in to speak. This was the easiest part of the day. As english (yorkshire version) is my first language I just had to waffle on about what I thought on a few diverse subjects - no probs there then. I can (as my wife often says) talk the proverbial pot eye to sleep. All in all this was an interesting day if you enjoy spending £95 to prove you can speak English. I will of course add to this post once I get my results - I hope I pass  as the cost is a bit steep and it would just add more time to the job. Best of luck to all who I met today and I hope his helps if you are having to take the IELTS in the future! Mr tyke
  15. HI EVERYONE !!! DONT PANIC THIS IS NOT AS BAD AS IT SOUNDS ....I HAVE JUST BEEN ON TO THE RIVERSIDE FARM RE THE MEET , I TOLD THEM THAT THERE WOULD BE BETWEEN 40 AND 60 OF US COMING TO THERE PUB ... THE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT WE WOULD TAKE ONE SIDE OF HER PUB AND WEEKENDS WERE VERY BUSY THERE... SO SHE ASKED ME IF WE WANTED TO HIRE THE FUNCTION ROOM ...... I HAVE SPOKEN TO MY PARTNER IN CRIME STEVE AND WE HAVE DECIDED ITS BEST TO HIRE THE ROOM AS I DONT THINK WE WILL FIND ANYWHERE ELSE AT THIS SHORT NOTICE .....THE ROOM WILL COST US £100 FOR THE NITE IT WORKS OUT ABOUT £2.00 EACH PLEASE GUYS LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS OK ... Medicals in York

Hi everyone We do regularly log on and read all the varied and wonderful threads people enter on this site, they certainly do help you through the looooong process. We are currently at the stage on our PR 136, where we've got our full ack and file number at the beginning of January and now waiting for the ever elusive CO , so we thought we'd go ahead and book the xrays, medicals and do the police checks :policeman:. My question being has anyone had their medicals at York hospital??? What were they like etc etc etc??? or is it best not to know. Also does anyone know roughly how long the wait is at the moment between getting a file number and getting a Case Officer??? - I know, how long is a piece of string, just thought I'd ask thanks for any replies in advance Mrs L

  21. :err:Hi everyone, firstly can I say what a wonderful site this is, loads of info and friendly people, been reading everything I can for the last few weeks, does, donts, maybe's, you name it its all here, completely invaluable, Thank you all. anyway jst been to the OZ expo in York, (marvalous) left there feeling more hopeful than when we went in, thing is OH Me and our young un would love to move and make a new life for ourselves in OZ (who doesn't) only problem OH or me for that matter doesn't have any qualifications to say we can do this that and the other, OH is currently warehouse manager, distribution & logistic's and has been doin same job for the last fifteen years, working his way up, one agent that did catch our eye at the show company called WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS said they would sponser us and could possible get us out there in a matter six months on a subclass 475 visa, Happy days me thinks, and that it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg, all sound to good to be true, the guy we chatted to was great, and Im sure everything is fine, just wonderin if anyone else has been sucsseful with this route, Im sorry to be rambling on, I have got loads and loads Questions to ask, I will take my time, it seems everyone tryin to get to OZ has to be patient and get used to the waiting game, thanks again any advice would be more than welcome, cheers Steteevic x:notworthy:
