  1. Wen't out for Breakfast this morning to the Dutch Pancake Cottage at Spring Bluff Railway Station with @The Pom Queen. The station is around 40 minutes from where we live, just North of Toowoomba. The station was opened in 1867 and lies on the Ipswich-Toowoomba line. Construction on the line began in 1864 with the project being tackled in five stages, culminating in the sixteen mile section from Murphy’s Creek to Toowoomba known as the “Main Range”. The Main Range was regarded as a notoriously difficult section of rail to construct, given the steepness of the area. Approximately 1,600 men were involved in the project. On April 12 1867, the first train from Ipswich reached Toowoomba, (The journey from Ipswich to Toowoomba took 5 hours). Highfields Station, commonly known as the Main Range Station in its early days, was the principal crossing and watering station because of its suitable gradient and abundant water supply. It was renamed to Spring Bluff in 1890. The station served as an outlet for timber, dairy and other produce for the Highfields area. It played an integral role in community life and after the construction of a dance hall in 1907 was an important centre for social activities. The station was decommissioned in August 1992. and it's a big for the pancakes, top quality
  2. Hi all, If you had to grade and rank each suburb in Toowoomba, which suburbs would be at the top and which at the bottom of the hierarchy? As an aside - and I probably risk getting absolutely roasted by forum members for stating this - but I want to avoid living near public housing. All advise will be much appreciated. Kind Regards, Gary

    Melbourne or Toowoomba

Hi folks I am in the process of being offered two jobs, one in Melbourne CBD and one in Toowoomba. I appreciate they are very different places, but I was wondering if there are any strong views on what the benefits and cons are of each. We would be moving over with our two children (one aged 13 months the other 1 month) and our two dogs and I would be the only one working with a salary of around $140k for both places. Melbourne has a lot of very obvious benefits, but I am trying to make sure I am making a balanced decision so I would be keen to understand if anyone has anything to say that would help me weigh things up properly. We are not really city people per se, but we are excited by the opportunities Melbourne would offer, equally though we are mindful that Toowoomba could offer a really good community lifestyle and probably a much better standard of living for the salary I would be paid. I would be interested to know: If you had two job offers of the same money in the Melbourne and Toowoomba, which one would you choose and why? Thanks in advance for your comments!!
  5. Hi Everyone, My client is expanding their workshop in Toowoomba, and historically has looked to sponsor UK and Irish Technicians / Mechanics in the Truck Division They are a very responsible sponsor of Expats, and as a result tend to have a loyal workforce who don't often look to move away. Anyway they currently have asked me to find them 4 Qualified Mechanics, preferably with 5-7 years experience, and ideally for a Main Dealership background. A 457 Visa Sponsorship if offered, or those who have already gained their P.R. equally will be considered. Whilst there isn't any relocation on offer, the client has always been open to helping families settle quickly and easily. I'm doing Skype interviews for the next couple of weeks if anyone wants to be considered. Please drop me a copy of your CV to richard@thomasmconsulting, or my Skype I.D. is richthomas517124 Thanks Richard

  7. Hi I'm a newbie but have been checking in on this forum on and off for a long time. My wife and kids (all 5 or under!) and I are moving to Toowoomba, Queensland in July. My wife has a state sponsored visa and will be taking up her post in August. Just to a few questions. Are their any Poms on the Forum who have moved to this area in recent years? What are your views? We visited Toowoomba as backpackers about 12 years ago and found Toowoomba to be quite quiet, however from what I've read it's grown quite a bit in the last decade. We've been wanting to emigrate to Oz for years. I had imagined us living on the coast, but it's going to be inland for us. We are tremendously excited and feel really lucky to have finally got the opportunity to live in Australia, but obviously feel very nervous. I'm giving up a good job in London but hope to find work once the kids have settled. Any advice on settling in Australia, kindly appreciated!
  8. I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks on this forum for providing great help and positive attitudes:notworthy: Hubby has been offered job with a fantastic orginisation and were packing up hopefully be over in a few weeks just waiting on 457:jiggy:I came across a post by protech a recruitment agency and emailed hubby's cv and thought nothing to loose but nothing will probably happen, well a few weeks later and 2 interviews he was offered job on the spot. Using recruitment agencies isnt all doom and gloom and i just wanted to say life is too short, so take a chance whats the worst that could happen! I also want to thank Gary Pepper from protech he posts on the job section for tradies/mechs and i would highly recommend contacting him if your looking for sponsorship, hes fantastic, a genuine lovely helpful man! So here goes a new adventure with 4 kids and a brother thats now tagging along, be prepared i'll probably be spending every spare waking moment on here, and apologise for my questions in advance  Lisa x x

    toowoomba - ipswich commute

Hi my OH is looking at a possible job offer in Toowoomba. I had my heart set on living near the coast and have friends in victoria point. I have been looking at the Ipswich area as a compromise and OH is willing to travel hour or so to work each day as i will be looking after children and would ideally like them too settle into a school that would allow us the freedom to move nearer the coast once we have perm residency. Any information would be great. Looking to rent in an area that is family friendly have 2 teenagers and 10 and 6 year old.

  16. I am relocating from NSW to Queensland with my family (2 kids aged 8 and 7) at the end of this year and need help deciding where to live. My OH will be based just outside Ipswich and we are thinking of buying a property near the main highway between Ipswich and Toowoomba. One place we're looking at is Gatton - does anybody know this area at all? Any info would be appreciated - especially about schools in the area. Many thanks

  21. Hi, we are planning on moving to Toowoomba in January (Just waiting to get our passports back from co) just got a few questions to ask anyone who lives in or knows Toowoomba. What are the best areas to live in (i will be going to the SQ Institute of Tafe so need to be relatively near here). We were hoping for ome sort of short term rental (anything from 2 weeks to 3 months) for when we first get over there but are struggling to find something suitable (where are husband, wife and 2 boys aged 3 and 4) any suggestions? Whats the shopping like?? (we have lived in Spain for 2 years and its terrible for everything here from food to clothes etc etc). I'm sure if I find someone to answer these questions I will think of a lot more!
