  1. I have been granted permanent residency and have to enter before Aug 1 which is around 6 weeks from today. But, I have no employment. Initially, I planned to come to Sydney for a week by taking leave from my current job, apply for a driver's license, medicare card and Tax file number. Also, in the week, I wanted to explore the job market. I don't want to leave my current job in my home country without getting something equivalent in Australia, though I understand it is difficult to secure a position from overseas as employers prefer a local candidate. I was told Sydney may have more positions for IT engineers so planned to come there. I don't know anyone in Australia. I glanced at the useful threads http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/new-south-wales/230105-registering-medicare-sydney.html and http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/new-south-wales/233424-how-much-spend-rent-sydney-single.html and realize getting a Medicare card takes 6 weeks and rents are more than I expected. 1. Where on Sydney can one stay for a week at the budget of 300AUD/week without sharing? I heard it cannot be a place where backpackers stay or a low budget hotel as I need a proper address to which my medicare, tax card will be sent. I am OK staying away from the main city to reduce costs as long as I can take the train and get to the city. 2. Can shared rental places or the ones on Airbnb be used as address for medicare, tax card? 3. What is the approximate time to get a driver's license, medicare card and Tax file number in Sydney? 4. Can I do anything to expedite the process of getting a driver's license, medicare card and Tax file number? I realize it depends on the workload of the agencies, how many people applied ahead of me and few other factors which an applicant like me cannot control. 5. Would coming to any other city like Melbourne or Perth mean quicker processing of these documents? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. As always, thanks to all the posters who generously advise people like me on different aspects of the migration.

    Aus Tax File Number

Hi everyone, so me and my cousin are travelling to Aus on 01 January! Very excited We have both got working visas and I have just looked online and to get your new tax file number you need a Aus postal address. This may be an issue as we will be in hostels etc. Has anyone ever had this problem or is there a way of dealing with it if you are travellers. Thank you in advance, Emma

WHV have I thought of everything?

Hi, me and my partner are preparing to leave for a working holiday in late November we are arriving in Perth and staying with family over Christmas as I have a Brother there and another in Sydney, so for these cities we have accommodation Sorted. We have also Booked flights, been approved for 417 Visas, arranged travel insurance (outbacker), opened a bank account with NAB and managed to save and transfer just over AU$10,000 With MoneyCorp (we intend to keep transferring money till we arrive) we have bought our luggage and most of our clothes and other items and already got our Optus Simcards . Just wondered if anyone can point out things we have missed or they would recommend? We need our Tax file Numbers but the website says we need to be in Australia before applying? Has anyone done it anyway? And has anyone got any tips for a good route to take and on what transport etc? We haven't thought of anything past new year when we will probably leave Perth other than a week on the Gold Coast with family in April 2014? Sorry it's a bit of a ramble just want to be sure we have remembered everything! Thanks!
  4. Hi all I have been granted a 457 visa to work in Brisbane and I will start work very soon after arriving. I therefore wanted to know whether it was possible to apply for a TFN before arriving in Australia in order to avoid being taxed at the emergency tax rate? Many thanks. ‚ÄčTim

    TFN (Tax File Number) expiry?

Hi All, I am from the UK, but with NZ citizenship. I want to go to Sydney to work within the next few months. Ideally I would like to get a job lined up before I leave the UK. To help my chances I thought it would be a good idea to have my Tax File Number validated and ready. I last worked in Australia 11 years ago, and still have my Tax File Number printed on a letter from the Australian Taxation Office. Is there an easy way to check that my number is still valid? Thanks in advance
