Currently a Quantity Surveyor back in the UK, is the QS work in OZ similar to that practiced back home? Is there much of a difference in private practice? Is there measured term surveying works in OZ (using schedules of rates like the PSA schedule of rates for building as used back home)? Is it an advantage being Chartered as a Quantity Survey in OZ? thanks in advance

Any Building Surveyors / Certifiers out there?

Hi all, Currently in sunny Devon here in the UK, with a sunny warm 24 deg C. How long it will last is another thing! Aiming to head "down under" later in the year after gaining skilled migrants visa just after Xmas. I am a Building Control Surveyor in the UK (Building Inspecor) which I understand are known as Building Certifiers in Oz. As with many professions, the principles are the same, but there are different sets of rules, which requires retraining. However this ends up as a chicken and egg. You need a job in your profession to get the experience, but all the jobs need expereince of Oz rules and regulations to get a look in. If there is anyone out there in the Forum who has knowledge of Building Surveying in Oz, I would appreciate some feedback. In the meantime, going back outside to enjoy the sun!! Best wishes all, Martin- 2 replies

Hello, I'm currently working in the housebuilding industry here in UK and have a good wealth of experience as a QS for national house builders as well as civil engineering contractors. Can anyone tell me what the prospects are like for myself over in Oz if i want to emigrate with my wife and 3 young children? I'm 35, my wife is 26 and our children are 7, 3 & new-born. We would have approx £80k in our pocket when we land. Any indications on job prospects, lifestyle, and new home expectations ??? PS "I just want a nice place to live, work, raise a family and play golf " cheers Kevin
