  1. I am interested in the Albany/Denmark area. Here are my questions: What is the winter weather like? Is it cold? Or is it warm compared to Melbourne and Sydney during the winter. Also, is Anvil Beach a safe beach for swimming (with kids) and also surfing for beginners older children learning to surf. Is it a surf beach overall. What is the community surrounding Anvil Beach like?
  2. A 17-year-old girl has died after being attacked by a shark in Western Australia's south during an Easter holiday with her family. The girl's mother and two sisters reportedly watched in horror from the beach as the 17-year-old was grabbed by the shark at Kelp Beds, near Wylie Bay, in Esperance just before 4pm. The teen, from Mandurah, was surfing with her father when she was attacked. Police, ambulance and Esperance Marine Rescue treated the girl on the beach before she was taken to Esperance Hospital in a critical condition. Thankfully this year as been a better one for shark attacks, condolences to the family. We share the Oceans and sometimes people go missing when entering them.
  3. Hi there just found this cool video of a group of people tripping around australia, really got me excited about my future trip hehe, so I'm sharing it with the community! It looks like west coast / victoria to me, what do you think? youtube link: Cheers!
  4. We have pretty fair skin in our family and I don't tan. I do most of my swimming / exercise before 8am but once my son gets in the surf he tends to hang around in it and dip in and out of it most of the day. When he was little there were plenty of kid sun suits available everywhere. his last few times in Oz have been during winter so we have not needed anything except a tee shirt over the shoulders. Has anyone got any recommendations for adult protective swim / surf gear? it will need to be pretty durable so it won't rip when getting on / off boards and comfy too? I see plenty of stuff online but am hoping some members have used some? Millie x
  5. Just chucking it out there... I've just put my entry in for one of the little warm-up events - the Sun Run in February: http://sunrun.com.au/default.asp?PageID=20952 and wondered if there were any other runners on here? I've joined a running club up where I'm living and they seem like good guys - running at 0630 in the morning is a bonus, no issues with heat and humidity then Anyone else planning on running the City to Surf next winter? Or any other events?

    Surf Board Shipping

Hi All Wondering if anyone has any experience and can offer input! Im moving to Aus in Jan on a 457 visa for the next 3 years I love to surf and bought a board back when I went 2 years ago! Want to take it back again, question is do I take it on the flight (it got damaged on the flight back last time) or do I get it put in the container? Im going to be living in townsville so surfing all the time is prob not on the cards! has anyone else put a surfboard in a container? I dont have enough to fill so will be sharing one (not sure if this makes a difference?) Thank you

    Old school surf movies

I've been watching the old school surf documentaries like Endless Summer. Man, sometime I think I was born 40 years to late. Was such a simpler time back in the early 60s. To be 20 back then would have been a beautiful thing.
  10. Anyone good at surfing? how long did it take you to be half-decent?. Cannot wait to get out there and live like a beach-bum in my spare time :cute:
  11. We as a people have been to quiet recently, there are many members out there, but we seem to have fallen by the way side somewhat, however the 'criteria' has changed somewhat, these are the new rules governing membership. 1. The Ability To Spell 'Cerebel' Without Looking In 'Bogans Guide To Australian Diction'. 2. The Ability To Enjoy The Finer Things In Life, You know, Like The Beach, Maybe A Quick Look around A Museum, (if not to taxing on the old grey matter of course). 3. The Ability To Do A Crossword, Just So Long As That Crossword Is 'Simple', Because We Are Simple, Someone Of Higher Intellect Told Me So. 4. The Ability To Help Others In Their Migration Journey, WITHOUT The Need To Voice Our Own Abject Disdain Of All Things Australia. 5. And Finally, Realise That PIO Is A Site That Has And Will Continue To Help Others Even If some Just Use It To Vent Their Vitriol And Contempt For A Country That Was Good Enough TO LET THEM IN. That's it really, so any members who want to join up, just post away, all spelling errors will be overlooked as we are just plain dim apparently. Cheers Tony.

    Surf n Sharks advice needed

Evening all, We are considering a move to South Australia. OH is a keen surfer here and is looking forward to continuing in Australia. Was wondering if anybody could recommend any good surf spots to live near? However OH also thinks I only want to move there so I can claim life insurance after he is eaten by a shark. :biglaugh: Could anybody advise what the real situation is on sharks in SA? Thank you, Lauren and Lee

So Proud of My Surf Lifesaver!

Sorry everyone but I just had to share this. My 14 year old has been doing an intensive Surf Lifesaving course this weekend, which he completes next weekend. He has been at the Surf Club all weekend from straight after school on Friday (including overnight) and rising at 5am for all-day training using the tubes, boards, first aid, how to use the defibrillator etc as well as alot of classroom theory too. He even had to perform a 'rescue' in the choppy seas on one of the adult volunteers, which is no mean feat for someone who is quite small for his age...but what he lacks in height, he more than makes up for in body strength and sheer guts...when he finishes the course next weekend he will be allowed to participate in the volunteer surf patrols. I'm in awe of him, and of all the volunteer Surf Lifesavers who freely give their time and risk their personal safety to keep us safe on the beaches. Hats off to them!!":notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

surf fishing - whats that all about then?

Thinking of trying it I used to coarse fish back in Blighty but never lived close enough to the coast for it to be worthwhile. So any advice, hints, tips, baits - what gear do I 'need' (I'm looking for the bare minimum as it could be a brief flirtation before getting a boat ) Cheers in advance

  16. I may be working in Brisbane next year (St Lucia - Uni of Q) and the family like the beach and surf. Is it feasible to live either on the Sunshine Coast (e.g., Caloundra) or on the Gold Coast and commute in to Brisbane (car, train, bus)? Any comments, experiences or options would be appreciated. Thanks .

  20. Just wondered if there were any POMs on the Gold Coast who surf and fancied catching up with fellow POMs for a regular wave? If we got enough POMs interested might even make it in to a small social/surf club with friendly comps, bbqs, road trips etc? :-)
