  1. The love of field and coppice, Of green and shaded lanes. Of ordered woods and gardens Is running in your veins, Strong love of grey-blue distance Brown streams and soft dim skies I know but cannot share it, My love is otherwise. I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains. I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror – The wide brown land for me! A stark white ring-barked forest All tragic to the moon, The sapphire-misted mountains, The hot gold hush of noon. Green tangle of the brushes, Where lithe lianas coil, And orchids deck the tree-tops And ferns the warm dark soil. Core of my heart, my country! Her pitiless blue sky, When sick at heart, around us, We see the cattle die - But then the grey clouds gather, And we can bless again The drumming of an army, The steady, soaking rain. Core of my heart, my country! Land of the Rainbow Gold, For flood and fire and famine, She pays us back threefold - Over the thirsty paddocks, Watch, after many days, The filmy veil of greenness That thickens as we gaze. An opal-hearted country, A wilful, lavish land - All you who have not loved her, You will not understand - Though earth holds many splendours, Wherever I may die, I know to what brown country My homing thoughts will fly.
  2. Hi All, We are in the following position and after reading many of the threads have decided to do the following, but would appreciate any feed back from the Poms community before going ahead and making any unforeseen mistakes/loses - We are moving to Perth end of 2011 and due to the unfavourable exchange rate offered at present we will go armed with credit cards (12k) and have been offered a short term loan (20k) to tide us over by family. We have funds in our accounts in the UK but would prefer not to transfer largish sums of money over when we can do it the forementioned way and cut out the weak sterling and pay them in Ozzie dollars earned. But, there is a real possibility that we will start a business up shortly after arriving and may need more funds. In your experience what methods are best to get - 1/ Best exchange rate 2/ Does it need to be organised in advanced from the UK end? i.e set up an exchange account? Or can it be organised from Oz. 3/ Our current bank is well known for not do you any favors when spending on debit/credit cards aboard. So we don't want to be left in a position where we have no other choice than to transfer from this account? I would appreciate any feedback or thoughts on this? Kind Regards Megan:wacko:
  3. I'd like to transfer a small amount of money to Mum's account in the UK and wondered whether anyone could recommend the best method of transferring small sums of money, approx. between £25-£100, please. I may be looking at the wrong pages but it seems the usual minimum is £250. I'd prefer to send a little bit to cover her costs as of things such as sending over parcels.

    tax on lump sums

hi everyone, just about to leave for down under ( or  !!) and will have the proceeds of my house sale in the bank by then approx 80k gbp. I know I wouldn't be taxed on this if I take it on the day I arrive - but if I leave a sum behind and then decided to bring it at a later date would I be taxed on it? I'm not talking about the interest I know that is taxable - but the actual lump sum? Thanks Paul
