  1. Hello all,my names Mitch Sweet, im currently 19 years old, i live in a small town called Nuneaton which is just outside of Coventry in the West Midlands. I am half way through a 5 year apprenticeship with TNT (an australian company!) as a heavy vehicle technician. This includes a lot of work with commercial diesel vehicles also training in welding, vehicle electrics and all my HGV licenses.I have always wanted to go to australia and live there and i would especially like to make the move while i am young with no major ties in the uk (other than family obviously). Unfortunatly I have not got a clue of where to start the process so i was hoping to get some advice on what the right steps to take are of you guys! especially visas! i really dont understand them! ahaMy aim is to be living in oz by 2015, i dont know if thats realistic or not! but by then i shall be 23 and should have my class 1 driving license and i will be fully qualifiedthanks!

  4. We left our car on the South Coast of the UK with my husband's brother - who has been unable to sell it privately for the last 2 months. Not that there's anything wrong with it! It's a family sedan (VW Passat '03) with a full service history. It's now going for silly money and I can remember what it was like needing a cheap car when we first moved and I would have LOVED to have been able to buy a car like it to get us started. Might be able to help someone else out rather than practically give it away to a dealer. If you'd like details PM me. :cute:

  7. Hia Folks, Planning to arrive in Sydney in June next year on a PR visa. we will be living approx 1 hour away from CBD, maybe more so a car I think will be a necessity as I will be working shifts, so expecting public transport late at night wont be that regular?? Does anyone know how the salary sacarfice scheme works with employers? and how soon can you purchase or lease a car through the scheme?..........alternatively, would it be cheaper to ship my car over, I have no idea about this cost yet???

Confused how do I get started ????

Hello everyone, Im so confused where to start with this all ??? Im a diesel fitter so interested in moving to Perth WA this time next year at the earliest. My wife and our 6 yr old son will be joining me. If We get our visa Is it ok for myself to move over before my wife and son or will we have to move as a family at the same time ? I would like to move first to sort things out ,schools, home etc etc. How do you go about getting the ARTC Australian Trade Recognised Certificate ?? Did anyone use an agency to get all the visa's done and were they any good or did you hit problems ?? Sure I have many more questions so will post more in future. Hope you can help and thanks Mike
  9. Funny but, UK or OZ, between 3 and 4, at least in spring/summer as far as UK goes, I get ready to go out. In UK, if it's raining - hard - I might change my mind about the bike ride and get my wet weather gear on for a walk. I don't mind walking in the rain but cycling not as pleasant. Why hasn't anyone invented windscreen wipers for glasses? Grey, damp, mild - could be spring in Hants! I miss those cycle rides/walks on a Saturday and Sunday arvo but I like going to the beach here too. Neilsen Park today - Shark Bay. 'Neither better nor worse, just different.' I LIKE it! In fact I like it so much I might use it as a separate thread title, not that it matters, noone cares about my life, stranded like a Pommie ET, lost, afraid, two thousand light years from home!

Getting started - Can you help?

Hi, my family and I are planning to emigrate next year. We currently rent in the UK and have a small amount of savings in order to do the move. Due to the high costs of renting in the UK, and a not very well paid job, I will probably only be able to save up enough between now and moving to support ourselves for a few weeks or so whilst jobhunting once we're over. I am planning to find work as soon as I can, I'm a maintainance man here in the UK, but have lots of other skills, so not too worried that I won't find work. However, if it takes a while to find work, is there a benefits system that we could utilise like the working tax credits, housing benefits, child benefits etc, like there is here? We have contacted centrelink but have no response yet... My wife is an Australian citizen and lived there for her teenage years, and our children aged 3 to 10 are citizens by descent. But because I'm not a citizen and will probably be on a working visa would we be eligible for any benefits should the need arise? Hope you can give me some advice, thanks for your time.

    Just getting started!

Good Morning/Afternoon We have just started the visa process, we sent all our forms away yesterday (1066 & 956) and we are now at a point where we don't know what to do next, apart from wait and do as much research as possible? My work are sorting a lot of the stuff out over there, they are paying for medicals, shipping of our stuff, visas etc We are wondering where some of the best places are to rent ie, child friendly with shops and cafes near by, also somewhere near work (Canning Vale) but close to the beach as well? We have looked at Freemantle, Willage, Coogee, Murdoch and Atwell, any info on these places would be very much appreciated? Also we are wondering about which bank to go with and how to go about transfering our savings and exchange rates, any info would again be very helpful? Thank you in advance. Michael

  13. Hello Appologies first of all because I am sure this will have been asked before but the site is so vast! Can anyone give me a list in lay mans terms what I need to get together, what I need to send off and to who in order to get my registration as a midwife in Australia. I am looking at the possibility of trying to get a 119 visa, anyone else looking or got this? Just seems to give more stability than a 457? I have my Irish registration in process, I have ordered my trancript of studies from my Uni. Re IELTS, I know I have to take the exam, is study necessery beforehand - as in classes?? Re jobs, does everyone just contact the hospitals directly? Have applied for a few through agencies but I don;t have experience yet so they don;t seem as interested  Please help!

    Need help geting started

 Does anybody know of a good visa agent in the manchester area ?
  20. Hi, My Australian fiancee and I are hoping to move to Melbourne in the next 1-2 years. We were there for a quick look around in Feb this year and spoke to someone working for a real estate company about the logistics of finding a place to live. We dont want to buy straight away, so would be looking to rent first of all, probably for the first couple of years. The lady we spoke to said that companies won't rent to someone who hasn't physically seen the place (fair enough as I dont think we would want to sign a lease for a house we have only seen on the internet anyway!), but it got me thinking about what we would do for the first few weeks in Oz. What have people on the forum done? A hotel is the obvious choice but a month in a hotel would be very expensive! Are there cheaper ways of finding temporary accommodation right at the beginning? Thanks in advance for your help! James

    Started the process

Hi All, My other half has just come back from oz, he went to adelaide and perth to stay with friends. We filled in the first lot of paper work last week to get the ball rolling, he likes both Perth and Adelaide? Just wanted to know what people think would be the best place to bring up triplets they are 10 months old or are both the same? I've lived in perth and fancied Serect harbour? But never been to Adelaide so.... x
  23. Hi all, if anyone has managed to have their worldy goods shipped here without problems - congratulations! Having looked on this forum today to see why we have been so unlucky with our choice of agents I think that we have had a similar experience to most other posters i.e. all fine and promised the earth up to having paid the bill and then - rudeness, inefficiency and blatant lies. Our goods were collected at the beginning of August and still haven't left the UK. We have been here for 5 weeks already and God knows if we will ever be reunited with our treasured belongings! If we are ever unfortunate enough to have to move again i think we will hire a lorry and drive the stuff to the port ourselves!!! I am going to try some frank feedback to the NGRS about our company but have no confidence that they will be at all interested - despite their claims on the website! Good job everything else about the move down under has (so far) been top notch.

    Started with the goodbyes!

5 days til lift off, and have just said farewell to my folks. I'm feeling a little strange about it, didn't well-up or shed any tears... ( i usually do) I'm not sure if it has really sunk in that I'm going. We have moved countries a few times but have always been able to take a trip home once a year to see the folks. This time however things will be different, and it was hard to see my elderly folks grasping the idea that they may not see us for another 5yrs at least (possibly more). As they are expecting us to travel back to see them, like we have always done before. I've read so many times on here how the heart-string are pulled/plucked when the move is finally on the go and the goodbyes begin. I think I really get hit when I hear my kids telling my folks and friends "not to worry you can visit and we'll write to you all the time". Little do they know it will be a long time....but we are used to skype and distance. I think this time I feel a little guilty as we'll be away for a long while... and for good. I am more than ready to go, and Monday can't come quick enough. Cheers LL
