    Snowing in Perth

Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit central inland areas of WA this afternoon. The Bureau of Meteorology says the storms could cause flash flooding and large hail. The Fire and Emergency Services Authority is advising people to stay indoors and away from windows. The bureau's duty forecaster Austen Watkins says the storm is slowly making its way across the state. "Those thunderstorms are going to form in the eastern parts the Wheatbelt and Great Southern, the South Eastern Coastal district, western parts of the Eucla and most of the Goldfields," he said. "So, we are expecting severe thunderstorms that are conducive to flash flooding and possible large hail in isolated areas."The hail storm hit the South West yesterday about 3:00 pm and lasted 20 minutes, leaving local vineyards bare after leaves were stripped from vines. Thick ice is still covering vineyards and farm land in the Ferguson Valley, north of Bunbury. Peter Giumelli's vineyard bore the brunt of the hail and he says he lost all the new spring shoots on his vines. He says the hail has now formed large blocks of ice. "Quite a substantial area is still totally white, probably about six inches deep with ice," he said. "The garden which adjoins the house is over knee deep and it's now like solid rock." Another vineyard owner Simon Burnell says after a relatively warm night, ice is still thick on the ground at his property. "Last night the minimum was probably ten or 12, so it wasn't actually that cold, so it says a lot for the amount of actual ice that's still ankle-deep in parts and was well over knee deep at the time," he said. The Bureau of Meteorology says the thunderstorms also brought large amounts of rain to parts of the northern Wheatbelt. The bureau's Adam Conroy says, however, other areas missed out entirely. "There were certainly some intense thunderstorms in that in terms of rainfall but it was also quite hit and miss," he said. "Some locations got up to around 50 millimetres of rainfall, Wongan Hills for example, but other places almost completely missed out, which includes Perth itself."
