  2. For everyone who misses Scotland you can now have a little bit of it in your pocket, the app is full of great information about clans, history etc - have a look http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/the-scottish-clans/id483183095?mt=8&ls=1 covers every clan supposedly

Scots in Oz and the Census

Australia still fails to recognise Scots as a language (even though most of the Northern Hemisphere does). It is not a dialect but a language. So on Census day, if you are Scottish and speak Scots (words such as wee for little or wean for children, or sweeties instead of lollies) then put Scots as one of your languages. Technically I speak Scots as my 1st language, English as my 2nd and Gaelic as my third (then there is French as well but not spoken at home).

  8. Hello all, first post. We're looking at a fresh start in Australia as we've never really got going here in Scotland. The 'we' is myself, girlfriend and 15 month old wee girl. I qualify for a holiday visa as I'm a welder/fabricator which is why I'm looking at Perth as there is alot of work there as far as I am aware. My girl is a Journalism graduate. If we are happy we'll apply for a permanent skilled visa after the holiday. I'm wondering what Perth is like as an area to stay and what the rental property market is like? I also have to be honest and say that one day I'd like to work as a miner. I am the first generation of my family for well over 150 years not to work underground. What are y chances of that? My certificates say I have completed an apprenticeship in a welding and fabrication discipline so would I be considered a boilermaker in Oz? Any advice welcome. Gavin, Karen & baby Alyssa.
  9. Hi there, If there are any Scots out there wanting to meet other Scots for a social let me know. My husband is from Glasgow - we have been in Melbourne for a few years now and it would be great to meet up with people with a similar sense of humour - my husband often gets tired of repeating himself. We have a 3yr old boy and live in the West of Melbourne but happy to meet up in other parts of Melbourne. Cheers Sam

    Scots on the move!!!!

Hey, We are a family of 3 and we are hoping to relocate to Oz by Nov 2010 so we are starting to get the ball rolling now! I am looking for a job as a midwife in a low risk unit or maybe in the community??? My husband runs a Leisure club just now and is looking for something similar in Oz?? We also need advice on childcare for a 2 year old????? We are having trouble deciding on Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide so any thoughts/experiences you'd liketo share would be greatly recieved!! Please help us get started, what paperwork should we do first?? So exciting but so confusing at the same time!!! Looking forward to hearing back from anyone who can help! D, G & wee G x x:laugh:

    Question for Scots in Melbourne

Hi, Maybe I am the only one missing it, but can you tell me all the butchers you know that sell Scottish square sausage and other such unhealthy treats. In particular near the city or to the west of the Westgate Bridge. I have been to Rob's British butcher in Dandenong, and they were great. It is just a bit too far to travel on a regular basis for a decent sausage (I know how that sounds):Randy-git: to go with my ice cold irn-bru (from Coles) All help is greatly appreciated DSL

  16. Hi - we're both Scottish and have been advised we need a police check for our employer sponsored permanent visa application / waiver clearance thingie! We were going to simply use the ACPO police certificate process as we're resident in England and have been since 2000, however we're not sure if we also need to get a check done in Scotland to accompany it - any ideas? Also, if anyone has had to do this, do you know where we can obtain the app forms etc? Thanks, K

    Looking for Scots

Hi. Going thru the process of moving from Scotland to Oz. Is there any one on this site from Edinburgh area who is going thru the same thing? Just wondering because it's hard to talk about future plans to the people who we're leaving behind. Hi to everyone that's already moved. Steve.
