  1. Hi there anyone has any ideas, when Cat 7 would be moving for application beginning of 2009? lots of us here are falling in this last processing timeline so we feel very far behind from everyone else..so anyone would have a bit of clue..what would be helpful to manage our time and patient to wait.
  2. Has any here heard anything from any semi-reliable source of the rumoured possible raising of the age limit for independent skilled migration? Or is the much-vaunted smarter points system going to confine itself to fine-tuning requirements for the sub-45 migrant pool and continue to ignore all the rest of us with the experience, skills and temperament to give Australia 20-years-plus of gainful employment? I read somewhere recently that the original imposition of 45 as a cut-off age was in part informed by assumptions about retirement age, health and life expectancy made in much earlier decades. If so, the time for dragging this particular article of faith into the 21st century is long overdue. I don't know many people in paid employment these days who realistically expect to retire before their early sixties at least. And how many people over 45 and working in a skilled occupation in a comparable economy do not, these days, have either full entitlement to a transferable state pension, or a sizeable private pension, or both? The only risk factor for Australia is likely to be the cost of health care, and the answer to that is simple: mandatory insurance. I truly do not understand why Australia continues to deny entry to skilled independent migrants over 45. Here's hoping for an overdue injection of realism into the points system and the raising of this ludicrous age limit.

raising the age limit to 55

Hello, Does anyone agree that with Aus being such a vast place and urging people to live and work there that the age limit should be raised as is in NZ. We have family in SA Adelaide and would like to join them. We are professional working people and have 15yrs work left in us and have reasonable pensions. Plus our adult children are looking to go and are training to be professional people. Is there any point in us even thinking about applying. Regards Ducati boy:cute:

  8. Bit of a strange one this, but just wondering if the thought had occurred to anyone else. With interest rates in Australia being as they are, my husband suggested that we might be able to raise money in the UK to cover the small mortgage we will need in Oz, either through a homeowner loan (now there are all sorts of implications such as selling this house that such a loan would be secured on etc etc...) or even if there are any companies in the UK that do this sort of mortgage. My guess is that you'd have to be a UK resident still to get a foreign mortgage via a UK company. Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts?
