  1. Hi All, Just a quick brief; I am a QS with over 7 years experience mainly in infrastructure, and have just moved to Sydney (landed a week ago). I have an 2nd interview for a construction consultancy firm (in infrastructure) on Friday (today is Tuesday) and I've just had a call to query if I would consider taking a Contract/Freelance position, to which I said I would look into it and discuss this further on Friday. I was initially looking for a permanent position but since I have just moved and I am looking for work, I may take this until something comes up. Does anyone know what is the going rate per hour is if I were to take a freelance role instead of permanent? Any thoughts or advice on the matter, including the rates are appreciated.
  2. Hello to all  Having recently spent two years on a working holiday visa in Australia, I have decided I want to move to Ozzy for good! I am a NVQ3 qualified Painter and Decorator, so will be applying for my visa with this. I wont be arriving in Australia for a couple of years so I have decided to train again (this is where I need help!) I have two options, firstly i have been accepted into college to do an HNC in construction and i have also completed my General certificate in Health and safety. The HNC will allow me to get in to Quantity Surveying and Project Management. The Diploma, a Health and Safety Advisor. I wont have time to study for both so what I need to know is what is going to be of more advantage in terms of salary, job availability, career progression once in Australia?? Is the HNC recognised for Q.S roles? As I will be emigrating on my NVQ3 I will have to keep Painting so will not have experience in either of these occupations until I make the move. I have experience working in the Pilbra and would like to get back into FIFO work with one of these occupations. I am quite happy to work regional if it means gaining experience in my new occupation. Any help will be greatly appreciated Kind Regards, James
  3. Hi, I'm a QS currently living in the UK, but I have a permanent residency visa and will be in Oz April 2013 (Sydney specifically). I have 7 years experience as a QS; 5 years experience in Infrastructure work (recent) and 2 in Refurbishment. I am going to start enquiring with a few agencies soon and I was wondering what the current climate is like for looking for work? Will I be ok with my current experience and the fact I already have a visa? I also have some excellent references which I'm hoping will help. Also are there any tips people can share or stories on how things have worked out for them and what they did initially? Thanks in advance! Kyle

    Quantity Surveyor after advise

Hi all, I'll start with some background: I am an intermediate [contractors] Quantity Surveyor with 5 years experience in Highway Infrastructure & minor Civils, I also have 2 years in Housing refurbishment. I am currently working towards my RICS Assoc Accreditation and have worked on a range of forms of contract upto £14m. I currently have a permanent visa (due to move out March 2013) and was wondering how I would stand for getting a job and if it's advisable to apply beforehand or is there no real benefit? Thanks in advance for any help!
  5. We are in a bit of a dilemma Both my wife and myself are very keen on migration from the UK to Australia, however we are really struggling with the visa minefield. The main issue seem to be around our qualifications. I am a Quantity Surveyor/Estimator, with 5 years’ experience, however I do not have a degree, only an HND (level 5 NVQ) in quantity surveying. I have worked in main contracting and specialist sub-contracting. Along with this I have over 10years operational management experience, again with limited qualifications. My wife is currently working as a Management Accountant for local government, with 6 years’ experience, however only has Accounting Technician Qualifications. We both have extensive and detailed CV’s. The problem we are finding is both our respective professions seem to require a minimum of degree level education with experience accounting for little or nothing. As yet we have not taken any professional advice, this would be our next step If there is anyone out there who has been in a similar position or has any advice, any info would be helpful. Please excuse our naivety as we are very new to the whole process

  7. Hi, I'm a 23 year old quantity surveyor, I have experience in refurb with my first firm and surfacing / minor Civils with 2nd. I'm up to HND construction with my qualifications but I think my work cv speaks alot better as I've had quite the opertunty for high value works and a quite a range of contracts for what you'd probably expect from someone at my age. I've got a visa so I'm just after what is the process to finding jobs over there while still being in the UK or any tips to how much current work is out there, will I be ok with my background and anything else you have to offer. Thanks
  8. Hi Everyone. My family and I moved over from Bolton Lancs to Wakerley near Manley on the 1st Jan 09. We are now in week 5, gone very quickly. My husband Simon (31) started work in Brisbane CBD as a Cost manager/ Quantity Surveyor nafter 10 days of getting here. My daughters Olivia (9) and Caitlin (5) started Redlands College and are in their 2nd week now. I am 36 years old and worked as a school Nurse back in the UK but I am having a good career break for at least a few months until the girls feel settled and happy. I love it here at the minute but have recently started to feel a bit down in the dumps and miss them all during the day. I would love to meet up with any of you ladies in the same position or similar to me and also to make friends with families who have recently moved here too. Hope to hear from you soon and maybe arrange to go for a coffee and a chin wag. xx
