    Newbie looking for Pommie mechanics

Hi, I am a new to this site Basically I signed up to the site to find mechanics that are either in Oz or planning to move to down under. My company has mechanical positions that need to be filled across Australia and not enough people to fill them so hopefully this site will help somewhat. Looking forward to speaking to new people, Cheers, GlobalTrotter / Andy
  2. The Soldier Rupert Brooke If I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever Australia. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom Australia bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam; A body of Australia's, breathing Australia's air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by Australia given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an Australian heaven. The Soldier Rupert Brooke

  9. Hi, it would be nice to hear from families (esp those with young kids) who live in the area. We (me+wife) have 2 boys age 1 and 3 and live in Herne Hill. We moved here in september 2008 and are happy, settled etc, but still finding it difficult to make new friends. Have met plenty of Aussies who have all been very nice, but often we feel a bit desperate as they have their own social networks whereas we don't obviously. I put a post in the 'welcome' spot about my thoughts on Geelong/emigration so far which may be of interest! Dom

    Pommie banking - the economy

Talking to a Bank Manager for one of the big UK Banks last night . They are currently PASSING 85% OF LOAN REQUESTS. There particular bank has £9 billion .....YES 9 BILLION TO PLAY WITH, and as quick as they loan some out. the money is being paid back from other sources. The UK has suddendly gone " risk averse".......people are paying back what they owe. I think they are calling this " the time of austerity".
  14. Have you thought of the BNI ( www.bni.com.au ), its flying here in the uk. You meet once a week for breakfast......early , and basically promote your businesses to each other. You then go out and promote each others businesses, via referrals...... . Costs about £10 a week ......and £450 a year ( about a grand all up ). I suggest that any of you that arent doing it .........give it a go.. There is only one business allowed per chapter......so you wont get 2 builders or 2 printers at the same chapter

    Pommie nurse new to Melbourne

Hi everyone, Just registered and it's good to see a lot of other Brits down under and happy to share their experiences. I'm hoping to move to Melbourne early next year to start a nursing job for Eastern Health. As I'll be moving over on my own I'm pretty nervous yet excited at the same time. Looking forward to hearing from anyone's good or bad experiences especially from other nurses. Also, any suggestions on flight over? Is it best to grin and bear the long haul or do a stop over? Any help would be much appreciated.
  16. Bad news about Corus steel . You will have to go to google for more news. Good news - i was with a mate whos in a senior position for a major national building company. They put 305 sites into mothballs 12 months ago, just shut the gates. 20% of those sites have just reopened with more coming on stream. He said things are definitely moving, confidence is returning, his words not mine. All the lads have got work to some degree or another.some have just picked up nice 12 month contracts. And more importantly i got talking to some bloke at a networking do ,who had ties to the bank of england.....he was getting technical,so i told him to simplify his wording. He told me Spring 2010 a change was expected..........dont shoot the messenger!

A bit of up to date pommie news

Its pouring with rain,we needed it ,better on monday. I was up in Stoke on friday , first time in 8 years. Last time i was there ,i thought what a ****hole. Roadworks, chaos, traffic, general mayhem. Well what a transformation ,the roads are all now finished, lots of new buildings etc. I have a mate who invests in property, and he is buying in Stoke. He can pick up little terraced houses for 55k, and reckons with its central position and proximity to the motorway, its ideally placed when things pick up

I have joined the site to keep in contact with my friend Dave who has moved back to the UK, crazy I know. He was living in paradise but missed his family too much. It's nice to be able to keep in touch and to read about other people's lives. Have a great day in OZ.

    Pommie Shops in Oz

To all you folks who are missing or thinking they will miss the food from home. This is not the case. Most major cities have pommie shops, and some even post out to you. In melboure and sydney theres one called treats from home and in brisbane theres one called britain by the bayside. check out their web sites. Thought Id let you know as for many years I craved things and did'nt realise that you could get them here. Even the chain stores coles have started to stock some items, a bit expensive but worth it to satisfy your cravings!:jiggy:
  24. My English DH and I (I am Australian) are moving to Sydney in 7 weeks with our 20mth old Son and another on the way. Obviously I am excited about going home to family and friends, but also a bit anxious as I have lived in the UK for 7 years now and it will be a new life for my little family. We both know it is best for us and our family in the long term. We have a house there and DH has a job to go to (setting up the Aussie equivalent of the UK business he works for now). Anyway, he isn't sleeping, he is distraught about leaving his Parents (who will visit us in Sydney for the birth of the baby 7 weeks after we leave, for a period of a month) and is generally in a state of constant stress due to work, the move and all that comes with it. Does anyone have any advice on how to help him through this, or how to make it easier. We also have our trip back to the UK planned for his Mum's birthday in August, so it's not like we will be going 'forever' and never visiting. Thanks in advance Shell
  25. Hi all, I have added more short stories/ interviews with British migrants to Australia here:- http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/poms-sun/ Enjoy. T
