    Changing Surname as a PR

Hi guys, Couldn't find any answers when I searched so hoping to get some advice on the following: Single British guy in his early 30s living in Oz on a 189 visa. British passport is almost full so needs replacing in the next year or so Eligible for citizenship in <12 months I've been meaning to change my surname for a while for personal reasons, and given the above, it seems like a good time to do it, prior to getting potentially 2 new passports. However, I don't really know where to start: Am I best going through the process in the UK first, then doing it here, or will I need to do both simultaneously? Has anyone changed their name in the UK before without being physically there? I realise my scenario is somewhat unconventional as I'm a guy, so have heard there is reluctance for institutions to go through a formal process, so particularly keen to hear about others who have been through this. Thanks for any help,
  2. I've been thinking about this all arvo, first whilst hanging my washing out (taking my mind of the faux pas of mixing coloureds with whites -WHY does that matter?), and then taking a shower (a PROPER one, not a 'Pommie' one!) There's no point in saying 'Avalon', 'Bondi' or 'Cronulla' when you live over the road from the beach and don't have to worry about parking. PAYING to park too! Why would anyone want to undergo an hour or more in Sydney's traffic or public transport system when it's 40 degrees? The only time I got burnt last summer was when i put a short sleeve shirt on, forgot to take my sunscreen, and by the time I'd driven from Artarmon to Curl Curl at noon on a mega hot day, my right arm was 'gone'. I've swam on over a hundred days at Neilsen Park this year - free parking, natural shade, safe swimming but I don't think I'd go if I had to use the bus. (I'm enough of an anorak to record all my swims in my diary - sad I know.) After all, they all have 'sand' and 'water' but what makes them stand out?!
  3. I've run this past a mod and have been given the ok to post. Thought it might help people when they are researching for a shipping company to move their belongings. This is for UK - Australia shipping. Am polling to see which companies people use(d). I've listed 9 companies but if you have used another one and wish to suggest it please post in the thread. I went for the higher returning ones on a Google search. Important bit of blurb below for legal reasons. Please read and post your replies accordingly. * Feel free to reply in this thread to say if you would would use or not use the company again. Something simple like **Name of company - 'Would use them again'** **Name of company - Yes** or **Name of company - 'Would not use them again'** **Name of company - No** will suffice. Please stick to PM only with reasons if not. This is due to legal implications for Poms In Oz and I don't wish to cause them problems or have this thread locked/deleted. If you wish you can gives costs quoted or actual costs in reply. Its not expected as some people don't wish to share such information but if you do, thanks in advance for the info. Gives those looking for an idea of expense something to work with. Please could you state then if its for a part or whole container. Thanks in advance. Cheers
  4. Here is a thread for all the currency experts on PIO. Have a think about your pick for the exchange rate for 1 GBP to the AUD by end of 2011. Will it go up or down ? The closest may even get a prize. The BBC site will be used as the official reference. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business/market_data/currency/11/15/three_month.stm

    Bear Poll

Following on from Robs pic of the Panda bear I feel it only right to ask fellow PIO members what is your favourite bear species. It all goes toward research and will hope educate us in the ways of these marvelous animals.:biglaugh: PS. I KNOW A KOALA ISN'T A BEAR SPECIES.:idea::biglaugh: Cheers Tony.

    New Poll, Sorry.

I know, I know, not another bloomin poll. But was sitting here today (after buying a pig, long story) and was contemplating my naval again, and wondering what the ages were of people in the migration journey, about to embark, thinking about it, or in the never ending cycle of the actual process itself. I only ask because I am approaching 48 very quickly, and however fleetingly I thought , 'Am I Too Long In The Tooth To Do This All Over Again'. As I said, it was only fleetingly, and can't wait to start the packing, booking again,:jiggy:. Just thought it may be interesting to find out the age range of people who are out there. PS. I have made this poll anonymous, I wouldn't want to hurt anyones feelings,:wubclub::biglaugh: PPS. I have allowed for several ages to be voted for as some couples/partners may be of a differing age. Cheers Tony.

    Milk! a poll

Milk currently $2 at coles.... is this a good thing?
  8. Hi Folks, Quick fun poll here. Aim is to garner some opinions of people that are thinking of going and may already of made the move. First, quick biog: Me: 34. Self-employed for 7 years new media/graphic designer. Wife: 36. Secondary school teacher. 10 years pro experience. 2 daughters; 2.5 years and 4 months. Lives: near Portsmouth. Own house with okay amount of equity (over-payed a lot). Don't particularly like the area or house. No decent parks nearby. No family network nearby. In 3 years no family member has ever baby sat (basically saying we don't have close family ties here). Due to work and circumstances most friends don't live nearby. Australia experience: Travelled down coast from Queensland to Sydney 8 years ago. Have family in Sydney. Just happen to be the cool side of the family that live there. Made us feel very welcome. Worries: Finding a job. Affording to live. So there you go, no great emotional ties keeping us to this country, just the usual financial worries I guess. Over to you!
  9. Enough already, this should end all debate.:biglaugh:
  10. There seems to be alot of difference in the amount of time it takes individuals to settle in Australia after emigrating. Some settle immediately and others at the end of the scale never feel at home, so I thought a poll would be a good idea so that people can see "at a glance" how long it takes. Hope it's helpful, am looking forward to the results! Sue x

    Stolen Generation Poll

"We apologise for the laws and policies of successive parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians," the apology says. "We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country. "For the pain, suffering and hurt of these stolen generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry. "To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry. "And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry." The apology says a new page in Australia's history can now be written. "We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians," it says. "A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again. "A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, indigenous and non-indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity. "A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed. "A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility. "A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia." The opposition on Tuesday accused the Rudd government of being incompetent for not releasing the wording of the apology sooner. "This is a government which hasn't really done its homework properly," coalition indigenous affairs spokesman Tony Abbott told reporters. "For months if not years, they said they wanted our country to apologise," he said. "They've been consulting for weeks if not months. A competent government would have finalised at least draft words before now."
  13. The latest survey indicates there will be a hung parliament, but it would be Gordon Brown who would be in the position to try and form a government as leader of the largest party. Labour could still win most seats, new poll shows - Telegraph
  14. Hi Tim, Could we pls arrange a poll soon asking what people intend to do with regards to Exchanging their funds whilst rate has dropped ie: cut and run incase it drops under $2 mark, or ride it out and see what happens with this bleak and troubled time we are finding ourselves in. It is a really hard call and really interested to get a general idea of everyone else;s opinions on it as we are all affected. many thanks, ADAMS FAMILY in Sidcup, Kent.

Where did the other poll go?

It's a pity that the last poll has gone so quickly as I thought it was very interesting and relevant for people still in the UK. Something like How are you finding life in Oz ? Is there any way on her of looking it up or something? When last I looked today there had been about 76 votes and the findings were very surprising. I think it was Aldo who started the poll, (good onya mate) and I hope someone can tell me how to find it again. Thanks guys, REDDERS

    Excellent Poll

Excelent Poll on the site today. How are You finding living in Australia? Just been having a look at the Poll on the site, I don't normally bother with the poll, but found this one interesting. How do people interpret the current results? The Poll is not exactly showing glowing results for peoples emigration is it? Or am I reading it wrong which could easily be the case. There's only one high score which sort of favours Australia and that's the laid back lifestyle bit (71% as I write) Probably put Weather on and it would also get a big score. :twitcy: What do all you lot think out there?

Poll- What do we do first?

:twitcy:Here is the first of a long list of Dibley Dilemmas. Myself and the current Mr Dibley cannot agree on what should come first. Now we have the visas what should we do first? 1. Book the flights and use this date as a countdown date 2. Sell the house first and book flights afterwards 3. Hide in a dark corner until all the confusion goes away Any advice, opinions, experiences welcome!
